Historical Description

DRIGG is a parish on the river Irt, with a station about half a mile distant on the Furness railway, and is 14 ½ miles by rail and 17 by road from Whitehaven, and 2 from Ravenglass; it is in the Western division of the county, union and petty sessional division of Bootle, county court district of Whitehaven, Allerdale-above-Derwent ward, rural deanery of Gosforth, archdeaconry of Furness and diocese of Carlisle. There is fishing here for salmon and mort. The parish is about 4 miles in length, and 2 ½ miles in breadth; it is separated on the south from Muncaster by the river Mite, and is bounded on the west by the Irish Sea, on the east by Irton parish, and on the north by the parish of Gosforth. The village consists of one street about a mile long, containing part of the township of HoImrook, the other portion is included in the parish of Irton. The church of St. Peter, rebuilt in 1850, on the site of the ancient church, is an edifice of stone, in the Norman and Early English styles and consists of chancel, nave, aisle, divided from the nave by an arcade of four arches, south porch, and a western turret, containing two bells; the arcade is Transition Norman. The east window is stained, and there is a memorial window to William Porter R.N. d. July 14th, 1849. On the south side of the nave is a mural tablet to the Rev. William Singleton, a former incumbent, d, Oct. 1841, and a window to James Barratt, of Carlton Hall, d. 1869. The font is of stone, and has a carved base. The church affords 275 sittings. The registers date from the year 1631. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £185, including 75 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Messrs. Lindow, and held since 1882 by the Rev. Clement Willoughby Bean M.A. of Christ’s College, Cambridge, and surrogate. The vicarage house, erected in 1890 by the patrons and ecclesiastical authorities, is a brick building with stone dressings, from designs by Mr. Thomas Lewis Banks, architect, of London and Whitehaven. The charities are now obsolete. The Victoria hotel, erected about 1856, near the station, by Mr. John Thompson, of Sandford, is now in the occupation of Reuben Birkett Roberts. Croft Cottage, pleasantly situated in a large garden opposite the church, is the property of, and is occupied by Miss Elizabeth Hodgkin. Near the shore in this parish is a chalybeate spring. Vitreous tubes, 30 feet deep, were found on the sands about 1814, and are supposed to have been caused by lightning. On the sea coast, in this parish is a large boulder stone known as “Carl Crag,” 12 feet long, 9 broad and 5 ½ in height. It consists of a very fine grained sienite, divided into transverse parallel sections of about 2 feet each by a vein of shale, of half an inch in breadth, between two narrow strips of quartz. The soil on the east is chiefly clay; on the west and north it is generally of a sandy nature; the subsoil is chiefly gravel, and the crops, wheat, barley and grass. Lord Muncaster, who is lord of the manor, Messrs. S. and J. Lindow esqs. the trustees of the late E. A. Burrows esq. and William Hodgkin esq. of Bridgestones, are the chief landowners. The area is 3,977 acres of land, 1,170 of which is allotted for the manorial rights, part of it being a rabbit warren, 102 of tidal water and 1,629 foreshore; rateable value, £6,220; the population in 1891 was 579.

Parochial School, erected in 1828, by the Rev. William Thompson M.A. a native of this place, & enlarged in 1876 by private subscription: it is endowed with £42 yearly, arising from money invested for the purpose, & will hold 138 children; average attendance, 70; James Porter, master. The master’s house adjoins the school. The Endowed school at Carleton has been demolished, & the building materials sold; its endowment has been transferred to the parochial school.
