Historical Description
EDENHALL is a parish, township and village on the river Eden, and the road from Penrith to Newcastle, 4 miles east-by-north from Penrith junction station on the London and North Western and Cockermouth, Keswick and Penrith railways, and 1 mile south-by-west from Langwathby station on the Midland railway, in the Mid division of the county, Leath ward and petty sessional division, union and county court district of Penrith, rural deanery of Penrith east, and archdeaconry and diocese of Carlisle. The church of St. Cuthbert, which stands in the park, is an ancient building of stone, dating from 1189, in the Norman, Early English and Perpendicular styles, and consists of chancel, nave, south porch, and a low embattled western tower with dwarf spire, erected in 1450, and containing 3 bells, two of which are ancient, and the third was removed from the private chapel at the Hall. The chancel, repaired in 1662, by Sir Philip Musgrave, bart., is divided from the nave by a Norman arch, enriched with billet and diamond mouldings: the communion table is of framed oak, supporting a slab of white marble: the east window retains some ancient stained glass, and in the west window are emblazoned shields of arms of the Hilton, Musgrave, Stapleton and Vipont families. The nave has an open framed roof in the Perpendicular style: the porch is pierced with lancets, and has stone benches: the font, a rudely executed work of very ancient date, probably belonged to a still earlier church. Within the sacrarium is a marble memorial, with brass effigies, and an inscription to Sir Wm. Stapilton, kt. lord of Edenhall, ob, 26 Aug. 1458, and Margaret (Vipont), his wife, with shields of arms of both: there are also numerous monuments of the Musgraves, 1659—1835, including Sir Philip Musgrave, bart. a devoted Royalist, ob. 7 Feb. 1677, and Julian (Hulton), his wife, ob. 5 March, 1659, and their family; Sir Richard Musgrave, bart. ob. 27 Dec. 1637, and Margaret (Harrison), his wife; Sir Christopher Musgrave. kt. and bart. M.P. d. 29 July, 1704, and Mary (Cogan), d. 8th July, 1664, and Elizabeth (Franeklyn), d. 11 April, 1701, his wives; Sir Christopher Musgrave, bart. clerk of the Privy Council, M.P. for Carlisle, and for the county, d. 3 January, 1735, and Julia (Chardin), his wife; Sir John Chardin Musgrave, bart. d. 1806, and Mary (Filmer), his wife, d. 9 Jan. 1838; Sir Philip Musgrave, bart. M.P. for Petersfield and Carlisle, d. 16 July, 1827, and Elizabeth (Fludyer), his wife; the Rev. Sir Christopher John Musgrave, bart., rector of Crundall, Kent, d. 4 May, 1834, and Marianne (Hasell), his wife, d. 19 Aug. 1835; and there is also a monument to the Rev. Thomas Watson, 31 years vicar, d. 9 April, 1833. The communion plate includes a silver gilt chalice, given by Sir Christopher Musgrave, 5th bart. The church was partially restored in 1885 at a cost of £160, when new choir stalls, pulpit and reading desk were erected, the pews considerably widened, and heating apparatus fixed: there are 200 sittings. The register dates from the year 1558. The living is a vicarage, with that of Langwathby annexed; average joint net yearly value £150, with 27 acres of glebe, and residence, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Carlisle, and held since 1880 by the Rev. William Lovejoy.
Charities.-Sir Philip Musgrave, bart. in 1677. gave £100; a sum of about £63 was afterwards, contributed by other members of the family, and the whole expended in the purchase of 17 acres of land at Lazonby, afterwards exchanged in 1811 for 25a. 2r. 24p. of land in Inglewood Forest, enclosed at that date. There are now 43 acres, and the income amounts to £11. John Williamson, who died at Chelsea in 1771, gave £50, the interest to be divided between the schoolmaster and the poor; this money, invested in Consols, now produces £1 13s. 2d. yearly. Sir John Chardin Musgrave, bart. who died in 1806, also left £50 for the poor, which is invested in Consols, and the interest distributed in money. These charities, together, bring in annually about £47, of which £28 goes to the school, and £7 5s. is divided amongst six widows.
At Bramery, now called “Honey Pot Farm,” in this parish, are two caves in the rocks overhanging the north bank of the river Eamont, supposed to have been first made for a hermitage, or as a retreat in time of danger. One of these is scarcely more than a recess; but the other, known as the “Giant’s Cave,” is spacious, and has a column of masonry supporting the entrance, with traces of formerly existing doors. At Oxhouse Oaks, stone and bronze hatchets of Pre-Roman date have been found.
Eden Hall, the seat of Sir Richard George Musgrave bart. is an elegant mansion of stone in the Italian style, built about 1821, from designs by Sir Robert Smirke, kt. B.A. and is pleasantly situated in a beautifully timbered park of about 130 acres, on the banks of the river Eden, with gardens and ornamental grounds of about 45 acres in extent. The pictures at the hall include some by Dutch artists, and others by Hoppner, Sir Godfrey Kneller, Sir Peter Lely, Opie and Sir Joshua Reynolds. At the hall is preserved with great care the famous drinking-glass called” the Luck of Edenhall.” It is a rare specimen of Oriental glass of a green colour, cylindrical in shape, but spreading out like a trumpet at the top, and is ornamented with foliage work, and enamelled in various colours: it is kept in a leather case of the 15th century, adorned with scrolls and vine leaves, and stamped on the top with the sacred monogram I.H.S. The tradition is that a servant of the family, going one day to St. Cuthbert’s well near the hall, surprised there a band of dancing fairies, and seized this cup, out of which they had been drinking; the fairies, after vainly endeavouring to recover it, departed, uttering as they went these ominous words:-“Whene'er that cup shall break or fall, farewell the luck of Edenhall.” An engraving of the cup and its case is given in the Art Journal for 1879, pp. 265—8. Much waste land was enclosed here at the end of the last century. The soil is light and the subsoil is rock. The chief crops are pasture, oats, barley, potatoes and turnips. Sir Richard George Musgrave, bart. is lord of the manor and principal landowner. The area is 3,280 acres; rateable value £3,614; the population in 1891 was 243.
Church School (mixed), founded & endowed in 1838, by Mary, wife of Sir John Chardin Musgrave, bart. with a bequest of £100; & also by other benefactors; the total income derived from which is now (1897) about £28. There is also an additional £10 annually, the gift of Lady Brougham, for the sewing mistress, & £3 os. 8d. from interest of money invested in Consols. The school will hold 50 children; average attendance, 29.
