Historical Description

FLIMBY is a parish, township and village on the sea coast, with a station on the London and North Western railway, and is 2 miles south from Maryport, 4 north from Workington, 7 west by north from Cockermouth and 30 south-west from Carlisle, in the Coermouth division of the county, petty sessional division of Derwent, Allerdale-below-Derwent ward, union and county court district of Cokermouth, rural deanery of Maryport, and archdeaconry and diocese of Carlisle. Flimby was anciently a chapelry under Camerton, but was separated from the mother church both by purchase and royal authority, in 37 Hen. VIII. (1546) and made a distinct parish of itself. The church of St. Nicholas, rebuilt in 1794 on the site of the old church, is a small and plain edifice consisting of chancel, nave, and a western turret, containing 1 bell: it was restored in 1862 at a cost of £400, and affords 194 sittings. The register dates from the year 1696. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £126, with 3 ½ acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the landowners, and held since 1875 by the Rev. Stephen Stott B.A, of St. Mary Hall, Oxford. Here are Primitive Methodist and Wesleyan Methodist chapels. There is a cemetery on Flimby Moor under the control of the Parish Council. The Working Men’s Reading Room and Public Hall were erected in 1873, at a cost of £700, by public subscription. Flimby is noted for its excellent bed of coal, which is worked by the Flimby and Broughton Moor Coal and Fire Brick Co. Lim. Ewan Christian’s (Dearham) charity is said to be lost. The family of Blennerhasset held Flimby Hall and a considerable demesne in Flimby for the space of 225 years, but in 1794 Flimby Hall and the demesne thereto belonging, was sold to Sir James Lowther bart. The Earl of Lonsdale, Henry Fraser Curwen esq. J.P., D.L. of Workington, and John Mackintosh Walker esq. are owners of the manor and the principal landowners. The inhabitants are chiefly employed in the coal pits and brick works. The soil is clay, sand and loam. The chief crops are wheat, oats, potatoes and turnips. The area is 1,650 acres of land and 419 of foreshore; rateable value, £9,179; the population in 1891 was 2,415.
