Historical Description
GOSFORTH is a parish, township and large village, on the river Bleng, with a station at Seascale, 3 miles west of the village, on the Furness railway; the village is 5 miles west of Wastwater Lake, 6 south of Egremont, 5 north, of Ravenglass, 12 south of Whitehaven, 16 north-west of Broughton (Lancs.), and 23 south-west of Keswick, in the Western division of the county, ward and petty sessional division of Allerdale-above-Derwent, Whitehaven union and county court district, rural deanery of Gosforth, archdeaconry of Furness and diocese of Carlisle. The church of St. Mary is an edifice of stone in the Norman and later styles, consisting of chancel, nave, north transept, vestry, west porch, and a turret bearing the date 1654, and containing three bells, one of which, ornamented in relief with figures of monsters, and inscriptions in Chinese, was brought away from the Anunghry fort on the Canton, river, on its capture by the late Captain Sir Humphrey le Fleming Senhouse K.C.H., C.B., R.N. and was presented to the church in 1844 by Lady Senhouse; the other two bells were purchased by the parish in 1834. The chancel is separated from the nave by an arch, apparently of the 14th century, carried on Norman piers with grotesquely designed caps; the stained east window was presented in 1883 by Colonel Windsor Parker and his sisters, and there are others, including one given in 1855 by Mrs. Gordon, of St. Michael’s, near Tenterden, Kent; another, given in 1877 by Mr. A. B. Steward, of Newton Manor, and one by Mrs. Arundel Barker in memory of her husband; the pulpit of oak, and the font, a gift from Rear-Admiral Francis Scott C.B. of Harecroft, were set up in 1858; there are mural monuments to Sir H. le F. Senhouse, previously mentioned, and to the Parker family. The church underwent some alterations in 1654, and in 1789 others of a more extensive character were carried, out, involving the destruction of a large part of the ancient work; about 1820 galleries were erected, and in 1828 a barrel organ was given by Mrs. W. Senhouse; the ceiling in 1830 was decorated, with plaster ornament, and in 1843, on the opening of a built-up doorway, various carved fragments of interest were recovered; the north transept, together with a newel staircase in a spired turret, were erected in 1858, art a cost of £600; and the chancel at the same time restored and reseated at a further cost of £400; in 1877—9 the nave was reseated, an organ chamber constructed, the windows on the south side remodelled, and heating apparatus introduced, at a total expense of £590, raised by subscription; at the same time a new communion table and lectern were provided, and benches for the children furnished at the sole cost of Miss Catherine Elizabeth Parker, and an organ was purchased for a sum of £200; in the course of the work traces of wall-painting were met with about the nave windows: the church is now (1896) undergoing restoration at an estimated cost of £2,000, under the direction of Mr. C. J. Ferguson, architect, of Carlisle; during the progress of the work, a copied tombstone and several grave slabs bearing crosses, and dating from the 12th and 13th centuries, have been dug up, and the ancient north doorway uncovered: there are 500 sittings. The churchyard, enlarged in 1864, and again in 1893, has been planted with a variety of choice shrubs and evergreens and is well kept; the rectory house, nearly adjoining, is a pleasant residence, built in 1880 at a cost of £2,100, and affords a fine view of the surrounding country. The register dates from the year 1571. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £195, with residence, in the gift of the Earl of Lonsdale, and held since 1895 by the Rev. Rees Keene M.A. of Jesus College, Oxford. There is a Wesleyan chapel, built in 1874, and licensed for marriages in 1881. The library and reading-room was established in 1860 by Lieut.-Col. Arundell Barker, and has a library of 900 volumes. The chief relic of antiquity in the parish is the far-famed Runic cross, a monolith of red sandstone, and nearly 15 feet in height; the carving on its shaft may be read in the light of Scandinavian mythology, but it most probably refers symbolically or allegorically to the Catholic Faith of Christianity; a feature of much smaller interest is a cork tree in the Rectory meadow, said to be the most northerly one in the British Isles. Mr. Isaac Hartley by deed of gift, about the year 1850, gave the sum of £200, invested in tonnage dues securities; of the interest, amounting to £8 yearly, £4 is distributed to the poor, and the other £4 is applied towards the education of children of poor parents. There is also a sum of about £35 11s. in Consols, given by a donor unknown; the interest, about £1 1s. is distributed in money. Gosforth Hall, near the church, and now occupied as a farm dwelling, was originally built in the reign of Charles II. by Robert and Isabel Copley; it subsequently passed, to the Poole family, and was transferred by them to the family of Rogers, from whom it descended to the late Admiral Scott, then to Mr. John Tyson, and is now (1896) the property of J. S. Ainsworth esq. J.P. of Harecroft; of the ancient house, the greater part is still extant, but 15 of the original windows are built up. On the north side of the church, in a field still called “Chapel Croft,” is the site of what tradition says was once an ancient chapel, some stones of which were scattered about within memory. Close to the site is a well or spring called “Holy Well.” Two annual fairs are held at Boonwood for the sale of cattle, on the 25th of April and the 18th of October, but owing to the increase of auction marts these are now of little importance. Hiring fairs for servants are held at Gosforth at Whitsuntide and Martinmas. Lord Leconfield is lord paramount of the manors of Gosforth and Boonwood, C. R. Fletcher Lutwidge esq. of Holmbrook Hall, is lord of the manor of High and Low Bolton, and W. Falcon esq. of the manor of Sea Scale and Newton. The principal landowners are Sir Thomas Brocklebank bart. of Irton, Messrs. S. & J. Lindow, of Cleator, W. Falcon esq. C. R. F. Lutwidge esq. Dr. C. A. Parker, J. S. Ainsworth esq. and Messrs. James Gaitskell, T. Poole, J. Sherwen and Mrs. Sherwen. The soil consists chiefly of a light Ted sand, with an abundance of freestone, but no coal or limestone is met with here; subsoil, gravel and light loam. The principal crops are wheat, oats, barley and potatoes. The area is 8,229 acres of land, 28 of water and 191 of foreshore; rateable value, £9,723; the population in 1891 was 1,327.
