Historical Description
The parish church of Greystock is a spacious structure, was formerly collegiate, and some of the stalls yet remain.
Adjoining this village is Greystock Castle, situated on an eminence, on the south side of an extensive park. The ancient structure was fortified, and some broken towers, and other remains, are still to be seen in the present mansion, the interior of which is elegantly fitted up, and contains several fine paintings; among which is a portrait of Mary Queen of Scots, in the dress she wore at the time of her execution. The present building was principally built by the Hon. Charles Howard, the present Duke of Norfolk’s great grandfather, about the middle of the last century. The barony of Greystock is said to have been granted by Ranulph de Meschines, to one Lyolfe, whose son assumed the name of Greystock, in the reign of Henry the First, it continued in this family till the reign of Henry the Seventh, when the daughter and heiress of the last Earl of Greystock, married Thomas Lord Dacre, of Gilsland, whose descendants retained it till the reign of Elizabeth, when it was conveyed to the Howards, by the marriage of the eldest daughter and co-heiress of S. Lord Dacre, with the Earl of Arundel, eldest son to the Duke of Norfolk, in whose family it still remains.
Near this place is a circle of rude stones, seventeen feet in diameter, within the area of which a large quantity of bones have lately been discovered, and in the vicinity are the vestiges of an encampment, supposed to have been a summer camp of the Homans.
One mile to the north-east of Greystock is the ancient manor-house, called Blencowe hall, the seat of the Blencowes, in whose family it has remained ever since the reign of Edward III.
Distant two miles from Penruddock and on the right of the road, is the village of Dacre and the remains of an ancient castle converted into a farmhouse. The principal parts now standing are four square towers connected by a centre building.
The house of Edward Hassel, Esq. of Dalemain, is a spacious modern building, of red stone, situated near the foot of a rocky eminence, and ornamented with elevated grounds covered with trees.
About two miles to the north of Blencowe Hall is Hutton Hall, the seat of Sir Frederick Fletcher Vane, Bart. The house is situated on a fine eminence, in a pleasant park, near a branch of the river Peteril. This estate was much improved during the last century, by the late Sir Henry Fletcher, grandfather to the present owner. Near this house, on Hutton Common, are the vestiges of a fortification, called Collinson Castle, of which no tradition either of its erection or demolition, is remembered.
GREYSTOKE is a township and parish, delightfully situated in a valley on the Petterill stream, and the Penrith and Cockermouth roads, and is mile west from Blencow station, on the Cockermouth, Keswick and Penrith railway, 5 west from Penrith, and 18 south from Carlisle, in the Mid-division of the county, Leath ward and petty sessional division, Penrith union, and county court district, rural deanery of Penrith west, and archdeaconry end diocese of Carlisle. The church of St. Andrew, anciently collegiate, is an ancient and spacious building of stone, in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave of six bays, aisles, sacristy with chamber over, and embattled parapet, attached to the south aisle, south porch, and a western tower with eight pinnacles, containing a clock and 4 bells. The church was made collegiate about the middle of the 14th century, and in 1382, Ralph, Lord Greystoke, obtained from Pope Urban VI, a confirmation of the status of the church, and in accordance therewith founded in connection with it a college of secular canons, and six chantries, each with its separate priest; but it appears that the college, being instituted by the Pope’s authority only, without the King’s consent, was not a legal corporation, and, therefore, at the Dissolution, the church became simply parochial. It was originally cruciform, and the chancel arch, part of the earlier structure, seems to indicate that there was once a central tower; the choir, restored in 1848 by Henry Howard esq. and the Rev. H. Askew, then rector, is separated from the nave by an open traceried Perpendicular screen, and has 18 elbow stalls, with curiously carved misereres and poppy-heads, Early English piscina and sedilia, and a fine traceried east window, in which has been collected some very fine ancient glass, principally fragments, but including, in lower portion, episodes in the life of St. Andrew. The sacristy has a glazed lyehnoscope looking into the transept, and traces of an altar, with a small niche, and together with the upper chamber may have formed a dwelling for a recluse or chantry priest; the font dates only from the restoration in 1892, the earlier one being now in Matterdale church. The massive north door has a lock of unusual size, and the south porch has stone seats, and over the entrance a niche; several piscinae, indicating the position of the various chapels, remain; an ancient altar stone, marked with five crosses, discovered near the tower entrance, has been relaid beneath the altar. The external walls of the church exhibit stones to which brasses have at some time been affixed; the tower was rebuilt in 1817, and in the following year other repairs were made. The monuments include an altar tomb of alabaster enriched on the front with figures of angels hearing shields (originally emblazoned with the arms of Greystoke), and at the end with the coats of Greystoke and Grymethorpe; on the upper slab are two recumbent effigies of knights in plate armour; a floor stone with cross flory, and the ancient arms of Greystoke, to John 10th Baron Greystoke, ob. 1306; a blue marble slab with inscribed brass in Norman French, to William 14th Baron Greystoke, ob. 10th July, 1359, at Brancepeth, and here buried with great state and solemnity; a mural monument to Alan Smalwood D.D. rector, d. 15th October, 1686; a monument of white marble with arms, to William Williams, of St. Nicholas (Glam), a devoted Royalist, ob. 12th January, 1679, and Barbara his wife; a marble monument to John Dowsing, gent. d. 24th October, 1777, and Anne his wife, and their son, William Dowsing D.D. Principal of St. Edmund Hall, Oxford; and a floor slab to a son of above, Thomas Head Dowsing B.D. rector of Langston (Mon.), d. 17th October 1830. The brasses now in the church (1897) are as follows:—1. Small brass with female effigy to James Moresby and Margaret (Filliol), his wife; 2. Five others with effigies to Rychard Newport, ob. 7th August, 1451; Wenefrid Newport, ob. 9th December, 1547; John Whelpdale, master of the college and rector, ob. 7th July, 1526; and Miles Halton, ob. 16th March,1652; the latter is in the south aisle, and has a cross also, 6. Inscription only to Thomas Eglisfelde and Walter Redman, master of the college, the latter ob. 4th November, 1509. On the wall of the choir are four shields, bearing each an escallop, and one of the initials I: D: P: G: for John Dacre, provost of Greystoke. The restoration of the church, begun in 1876, was completed in 1896 at a total cost of £4,000, and it now affords 800 sittings. The registers date from the year 1558. The living is a rectory, net yearly value, £447, with residence and glebe, in the gift of and held since 1875 by the Rev. Edmund Adam Askew M.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge. The rector of Greystoke is patron of the livings of Matterdale, Mungrisedale and Watermillock. The village reading room, built in 1883, by Mrs. Howard, is open daily.
Charities:-The Rev. William Morland M.A. rector, left in 1668 a sum of £20, and this is now represented by about £22 in Consols, the interest of which, amounting to 12s. is distributed in money to the poor in the township of Greystoke. Thompson’s charity, for the poor of Greystoke, Motherby and Gill, was left in 1740, by Thomas Thompson, and yields a like sum. The Unthank estate consists of 12a. 2r. 30p. of land at Unthank in Skelton parish, purchased with money left in 1727 by Barbara Ralph, and afterwards by Mabel Halton; the rents now afford about £13 for the poor of Greystoke and Johnby, and 23s. for educational purposes. Dorothy Halton’s charities, left in 1715, for the benefit of the same places, are apparently lost. Miss Ann Trontbeck in 1815, bequeathed £44 13s. 5d. the interest of which, now about 24s. 4d. is distributed in money to the poor of Greystoke and Little Blencowe.
Greystoke Castle, the seat of Henry Charles Howard esq. J.P., D.L. the head of one of the branches of that illustrious family, is an ancient building, crenellated or converted into a fortified residence in 1353, by William de Greystoke, by license from Edward III.; the greater part of the castle, originally quadrangular, with four towers, was destroyed by fire during the Civil War, but about the middle of the 18th century it was almost entirely rebuilt by the Hon. Charles Howard, and it was afterwards enlarged and altered by his grandson Charles, 11th Duke of Norfolk K.G. who also created extensive new plantations on the estate. In 1840 the building was very completely repaired by Bernard Edward, 12th Duke of Norfolk, under the direction of Anthony Salvin esq., F.S.A, architect, and its late owner, Henry Howard esq. who died in 1875 greatly improved it. On the west front is a terrace, 560 feet in length and 25 feet wide, shaded by lime and sycamore trees. On 4th May, 1868, a destructive fire occurred by which many valuable pictures and objects of interest were lost. The park, of between 5,000 and 6,000 acres, by which it is surrounded, is almost unique, being the only one of the same extent in England which has not a right of way or footpath through it; it has two fine sheets of water, and is well stocked with deer. Near here is Ulleswater Lake, which is much frequented by tourists in the summer.
Greenthwaite Hall, now a farmhouse, was anciently the seat of a branch of the Haltons of Tynedale in Northumberland, who built the house about 1650; in 1678 the family removed into Derbyshire, but still maintained their residence here, until the estate was disposed of in 1785 to Charles, 10th Duke of Norfolk, by Wingfield Halton esq. of Wingfield. The hall consists of a main block of building about 80 feet in length, the principal front facing north, and a western wing about 35 feet long, the two portions enclosing two sides of a square courtyard, which is defined on the north by the farm buildings; the principal entrance is through a gabled porch three storeys in height, and projecting nine feet from the main wall; above the doorway, and enclosed within the dripstone, is a slab bearing the legend, “PEREGRINOS HIC NOS REPVTAMVS, 1650,” flanked at one end by an impaled shield of arms, and at the other by the initials “M. H. D.” for Miles Halton, who died in 1652, and Dorothy (Wybergh), his wife; immediately above this is a sunk tablet displaying the arms of Halton, with helmet, crest and mantling, and the date 1660; over the window of a room on the first floor of the porch is a long ornamental panel, carved with roundles and foliage, and enclosed by a bold moulding; and similar panels appear over other windows; the upper room retains an aumbry, and was perhaps used as a chapel; the house itself is two storeys in height; the ground floor in the main block comprises the hall, parlour, and withdrawing-room; the hall, at the west end, was originally a single apartment, 29 feet 4 inches by 18 feet 6 inches; but has now been divided to form a passage, and one of its windows removed to form a doorway; at its eastern end is a huge fireplace, the arch of which has a span of 10 feet 8 inches; the ancient withdrawing-room now serves as a dairy; the west wing contains a kitchen and bedroom. At Wounded Cairn are remains of cairns, Henry Charles Howard esq. is lord of the manor and principal landowner. Courts leet are held here twice a year. The chief crops are oats, potatoes, and grassland The soil is chiefly clay and sand; subsoil, varied. The area of Greystoke, Johnby, Little Blencowe, and Motherby and Gill township is 7,493 acres; rateable value, £5,132; the population in 1891 was 571 in the township and 1,186 in the parish.
National School (mixed), built in 1838, & endowed; it will hold 100 children; average attendance, 82.
Motherby and Gill, or Greystoke Gill are places in the township of Greystoke. Isaac Peacock, about 1767, bequeathed £20 for the poor of Motherby and Gill; this sum, increased and invested in Consols, now produces about 14s. a year. H. C. Howard esq. is lord of the manor. The soil is clay; crops, oats and potatoes. The area in Motherby, 351 acres; rateable value, £520; Greystoke Gill, 117 acres; rateable value, £165.
