Historical Description

The flourishing village of Harrington is situated about one mile and a half to the right of our road; this village, being close to the shore, at the mouth of a small brook, which contributes to form a very convenient port, possesses a considerable trade, nearly 60 vessels of 100 tons burthen, being employed in the exportation of coal, lime, iron-stone, and fire clay, all of which articles are obtained in the neighbourhood.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

HARRINGTON, anciently “Haveringham,” is a small seaport and a parish, extending for 2 ½ miles along the sea coast, with a station on the London and North-Western railway, and another on the Cleator and Workington Junction railway, and is 2 ½ miles south, from Workington, 5 north from Whitehaven and 304 ½ from London, in the Western division of the county, ward of Allerdale-above-Derwent, Whitehaven petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Whitehaven, archdeaconry of Westmorland and diocese of Carlisle. Under the provisions of the “Local Government Act, 1894,” the parish is governed by an Urban District Council of 7 members, having been from March, 1891, under the control of a Local Board; the town, the lower part of which was once known as “Bella Port,” comprises several streets, and is lighted with gas by the Harrington Gas Light Co. Lim. established in 1866, and supplied with water from Crummock lake, by the Joint Water Committee of Cockermouth and Workington, the reservoir being at High Harrington, and the pumping station at Stainburn. The church of St. Mary, standing on an eminence overlooking the port, is an ancient edifice of stone in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, west porch, and a western tower, containing a single 14th century bell, said to have been brought from Furness Abbey. On the floor of the nave is a stone inscribed to the Rev. D'Arcy Otley M.A. rector from 1753, d. 15 Sept. 1780: the church was restored in 1885 at a cost of £2,000, and affords 500 sittings. In the churchyard is the tomb of the Rev. John Curwen, rector, 1823, d. 24 Feb. 1840; and a memorial to William Sanderson, 62 years parish clerk, d. 24 Jan. 1803. The registers date from the year 1653. The living is a rectory, gross yearly value £570, net £510, with 19 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of Henry Fraser Curwen esq. and held since 1862 by the Rev. Alfred Francis Curwen J.P. of St. Bees. The Catholic church in Church road, dedicated to St. Mary, and built in 1893, at a cost of £2,000, is an edifice of stone in the Early English style, from the designs of Mr. Charles Walker, architect, of Newcastle and Liverpool, and consists of chancel, nave, and a large western porch; the altar of carved oak came from Bruges, and the east window and two others are stained: there are 300 sittings. Rev. Father Francis Hickey O.S.B, priest in charge. The Wesleyan chapel, built in 1886, will seat 250 persons; the Presbyterian chapel, erected in 1881, also seats 250; the Primitive Methodist chapel, built in 1891, has 150 sittings, and the Plymouth Brethren have a meeting room in Christian street. The harbour, originally constructed in 1760 by the late Henry Curwen esq. was greatly enlarged in 1891, and now belongs to a company. It is capable of receiving ships of 1,000 tons burden, and the depth of water at spring tides is from 18 to 20 feet; when there is a depth of 8 feet of water, a red ball is shown during the day, and a red light at night, and on a vessel leaving the harbour a red flag is hoisted, so that the navigation may not be impeded. At the entrance of the harbour is a lighthouse, showing a white light, visible at a distance of 12 miles; the quays are furnished with large steam cranes for the loading and unloading of vessels between tides, and the local railways afford ample facilities for the transmission of goods. For Custom House purposes this port rates as a creek under Workington, and an officer attends daily: a steam tug and a dredger are provided for use in the harbour. The chief industries here are the manufacture of iron and fire bricks, carried on by Messrs. James Bain and Co. who have several collieries in the district. Steel rails, bar and pig iron, coal and tinplate are largely exported, and the imports include iron-ore, coals and coke. There are branches here of the Cumberland Union Banking. Co. and the Whitehaven Joint Stock Bank. The Victoria Hall is held by Messrs. Joseph and J. B. Tolson, and there is a Temperance Hall in Church road. The committee for the promotion of technical instruction in Harrington and Distington has its offices in Victoria Hall buildings. The Young Men’s Christian Association occupies rooms at the Temperance Hall. On a wall near a wood in the parish is a stone inscribed to Joseph Thompson, who died 31 May, 1745, and was buried at this spot. Eastcroft, the residence of Mrs. Gambles, is a modern mansion in the Elizabethan style, standing in its own grounds of 10 acres, on an eminence overlooking the Solway Firth, and commanding extensive views of the surrounding country. Henry Fraser Curwen esq. of the Hall, Workington, who is lord of the manor, and Messrs. James Bain and Co. are the principal landowners. The soil is sandy, and in places clay; subsoil, stone and coal. The chief crops are oats, turnips and potatoes. The area is 2,354 acres of land and 199 of foreshore; rateable value, £18,250; the population in 1891 was 3,535.
