Historical Description
HENSINGHAM is a township and village, and was formed into a parish 23rd August, 1867, from that of St. Bees; it is in the Western division of the county, ward and petty sessional division of Allerdale-above-Derwent, Whitehaven union and county court district, and in the rural deanery of Whitehaven, archdeaconry of Westmorland and diocese of Carlisle. The village stands on an elevated site on the road to Egremont, 1 mile south-east from Whitehaven (Corkinkle) station, on the London and North Western and Furness railways, and commands a good view of the town and harbour; it is lighted with gas by the Whitehaven Gas Company, and is supplied with water from the Ennerdale Lake and from the Whitehaven works. The church of St. John the Evangelist is a modern building of stone in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch, and an embattled tower on the south-west, containing a clock and 1 bell; the chancel was added in 1859, and the organ chamber in 1872. The stained east window was erected by the late Mrs. Bell, in memory of her husband and sister; there are also four memorial windows to members of the Spedding family, of Summergrove, and others to Mrs. Milward, of Richmond Hill, to Mr. Stanley, who was drowned in Windermere Lake, and to a daughter of James Lumb esq. J.P. of Homewood; and there are stained lights in the chancel and organ chamber; in the church is a monument to the Rev. Charles Church M.A. first incumbent of Hensingham, and afterwards chaplain to the Hon. East India Company, who died on his voyage home from India, 15th April, 1822. The church affords about 600 sittings, of which 186 are free. The church graveyard was closed to interments by Orders in Council, 4th March, 1864 and 10th January, 1865. The register of baptisms dates from July 1811; burials, from February, 1812; and marriages, from 1824. The living is a vicarage; net yearly value, £195, with residence, built in 1879—80 at a cost of over £2,000, including the boundary walls; it is in the gift of the Earl of Lonsdale, and held since 1865 by the Rev. William Henry Wilkinson, of St. Bees. The Wesleyan chapel here, a building of stone, was erected in 1856. The mission room, at Keekle terrace, erected in 1875, is also used as a day school. The Church Sunday School is used for public meetings and entertainments, and will hold 200 persons. The cemetery of two acres, formed in 1866, is now under the control of the Parish Council. Lady Senhouse's Charity of £50 in stock, now held by official trustees, was bequeathed in 1842, and produces £1 13s. for distribution in money at Christmas. In 1883 £50 was left by Mrs. Mary Riley, and invested in North British Railway Stock for the poor. In 1884 a sum of £200 was left by Mrs. Bell, late of the Hollins, for the benefit of 12 poor widows; it is invested in London and North Western Railway Guaranteed Stock, and the interest is distributed at Christmas by the vicar and churchwardens. A further sum of £500, left by the same donor to the schools in connection with St. John’s Church, was expended in erecting an infants’ school and the class room at Keekle terrace. Here was born, in 1519, Edmund Grindal D.D. of Pembroke College, Cambridge, Bishop of London, 1559, Archbishop of York, 1570, and of Canterbury, 1575, which high dignity he resigned in 1582, on account of blindness and other infirmities. He assisted Fox in the compilation of his “Acts and Monuments”; was the means of introducing the tamarisk plant into England, and in 1583 founded the celebrated Free School at St. Bees. He died at Croydon, 6th July, 1583, and was buried in the parish church; the fine tomb subsequently erected to him was destroyed in the calamitous fire of Saturday, 5th January, 1867, but its remains have been preserved.
