Historical Description

IRTON is a parish on the river Irt, comprising the chief part of the township of Irton-with-Santon, the rest being in the parish of St. Bees, in the Western, division of the county, ward and petty sessional division of Allerdale-above-Derwent, Bootle union, county court district of Whitehaven, rural deanery of Gosforth, archdeaconry of Furness and diocese of Carlisle. The township is 4 miles north-east from Drigg station on the Furness railway, 4 south-by-west from Wastwater lake, 3 ½ north-by-east from Ravenglass, 10 south-east from Egremont, 15 north-west from Broughton (Lancs.) and 15 south-by-east from Whitehaven. The parish was enclosed by Act of Parliament, passed in 1809. The church of St. Paul, rebuilt in 1795, and again rebuilt on the same site in 1856—7, and re-opened 16 June, 1857, is an edifice of stone in the Perpendicular style, from designs by Mr. Miles Thompson, architect, of Kendal, and consists of chancel, nave, porch and an embattled western tower with turret containing 8 bells; the chancel, separated from the nave by a fine arch, has a stained east window, the gift of Mrs. Hodgson; the stained west window was presented by the late Samuel Irton esq. of Irton Hall, d. 12 April, 1766; there is another to Vice-Admiral Brian Hodgson, d. at Holmrook Hall, 6 Feb. 1855, two given respectively by Mrs. Brian Hodgson and the late Rev. Robert Gordon Collingwood M.A. vicar here, 1855—81, and two in the porch, presented by Mr. Wailes, of Newcastle: there are monuments in the chancel to Samuel Irton esq. mentioned above, to Lieut.-Col. Samuel Irton H.E.I.C.S. d. 13 March, 1813, and others of this family, and also to Admiral Skeffington Lutwidge R.N. of H.M.S, “Carcass,” d. 15 Aug. 1814, and to Vice-Admiral Brian Hodgson, already named: the church has been restored since 1873, at a cost of £1,500, and affords 230 sittings. In the churchyard is a very ancient and massive stone cross, about ten feet high, richly sculptured on one side with interlaced work, and on the other with various patterns in compartments, surrounded by a twisted border. The registers date from the year 1697. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £175, in the gift of the Messrs. Lindow, and held since 1882 by the Rev. Kenneth Mackenzie Pughe M.A. of Brasenose College, Oxford.

Charities:-The poor's money of 10s. yearly is derived from about £18 invested in Savings Bank securities. The School charity, now consisting of 2 acres of land and £301 in Consols, together producing £10 5s. yearly, is held by official trustees. A charity for bread &c. is said to be lost.

Various relics of Pre-Roman date, including a flint spear head, stone weapons and an unpolished celt, have been found here and on the fell.

Irton Hall, the seat of Thomas Brocklebank esq. J.P. is an ancient mansion, incorporating an embattled quadrangular tower and other portions of an early border castle; it is delightfully situated on an eminence, commanding extensive views of the surrounding country, and in front of the house stands an oak of great size and age. The parish generally is hilly, the eastern parts mountainous; the soil variable, some parts being sandy, and in other parts peat or bog, from which turf is cut for fuel; neither coal, lime, nor freestone is found here, but granite is plentiful. The manor of Irton was held in the reign of Henry I. by Bartram de Irton, whose successor, Adam de Irton, was a knight hospitaller, and joined in the crusades; from him descended John Irton esq. temp. Edward IV. who married Anne, daughter of Sir Thomas Lumplugh kt.; his grandson, Thomas Irton esq. fought at Fiodden Field (9 Sept. 1513), and was there knighted by the Earl of Surrey, who commanded the English forces; three later members of the family, in 1543, 1753 and 1765, were high sheriffs of Cumberland, and more recently Samuel Irton esq. of Irton, was M.P. for West Cumberland in several parliaments. Greenlands is the residence of Sir Thomas Brocklebank bart. D.L., J.P. Lord Muncaster, who is lord of the manor, Sir Thomas Brocklebank bart. Thomas Brocklebank esq. Major C. R. Fletcher Lutwidge, John Musgrove esq. J. K. Bourne esq. and the trustees of the late Mr. Jacob Gaitskell, are the principal landowners. There are also some small owners.
