LAMPLUGH is a township and parish, 9 miles east-north-east from Whitehaven and 8 south from Cockermouth, in the Western division of the county, ward and petty sessional division of Allerdale-above-Derwent, Whitehaven union and county court district, rural deanery of Whitehaven, archdeaconry of Westmorland and diocese of Carlisle. The stations at Wright Green, Rowrah and Winder, on the London and North Western and Furness railways, are all on the western border of the parish, and the Roman road from Egremont Castle to Cockermouth passes through it. The parish is divided into four townships, viz.-Lamplugh, Murton, Kelton and Winder. The church of St. Michael is an ancient building of stone, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and an open western turret containing 2 bells: the stained east window was erected by subscription in 1882 at a cost of £100; there are also memorial windows to Anne Braithwaite, wife of William Rogers esq. of Mill Gill Head, d. 23rd July, 1858; Annie Braithwaite, d. 19th January, 1865, and John Braithwaite, d. 8th December, 1865, erected by Daniel and Hannah Rogers, of Greensyke; in the church is a monumental tablet to Thos. Lamplugh, 1737; Frances, his wife, 1745; and Richard Briscoe, their son-in-law, 1750; and another to Margaret Briscoe, daughter of Thos. Lamplugh, and wife of Richard Briscoe, d. 1731: the church was restored in 1870, and affords 280 sittings. The registers date from the year 1581. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £200, with 3 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of W. L. Brooksbank esq. and held since 1888 by the Rev. Stewart Graham Craig B.A. of St. John's College, Cambridge. This place gave rise at an early date to a family of the same name. Sir Robert de Lamplugh kt. was lord here temp. Henry II. and Richard I. and among his descendants, who continued to hold the lordship for many generations, was Col. John Lamplugh, a devoted Royalist, who was wounded and taken prisoner at Marston Moor (2nd July, 1644). The last male heir, the Rev. Thomas Lamplugh, rector of Copgrove and prebendary of York, died in 1783, leaving three sisters and coheiresses, one of whom married John Lamplugh Lamplugh-Rapier esq. The tower of Lamplugh Hall, a massive rectangular embattled structure, with loopholed walls 9 feet thick, stood on the right hand of the entrance to the present farmyard, but was destroyed in 1821, and its materials used in erecting the present farm buildings; the gateway, over which is a shield with the arms of the Lamplugh family, and the date 1595, remains. Near Stockhow Hall are the remains of a Druidical circle, similar to those found in other parts of the kingdom, and generally known as the standing stones; only the northern portion is now visible, the remainder having been blasted and removed many years ago. The existing portion consists of 6 large blue cobble stones, placed at irregular distances, and mostly of an oblong shape, four of the largest being nearly four feet in height, and supported in an upright position by other large stones around their bases. Near Lamplugh Hall is a mineral spring of a powerful astringent quality. On the estate of Jsph. Dickinson esq. J.P. of Red How, an ancient British stone hammer, in good preservation, was found some years ago. A great part of the parish is very elevated, and contains the lofty eminences of Blake Fell (1,878 feet. Knock Murton 1,461 feet), Beacon Knock, and Owsen Fell (1,341 feet). Considerable quantities of iron ore and limestone are obtained in the parish. The mineral royalty, containing the mountains of Blake Fell and Knock Murton, belongs to Walter Lamplugh Brooksbank esq. J.P. who is also lord of the manor of Lamplugh and Murton townships. The soil is chiefly gravel and loam; subsoil, limestone. The chief crops are grass and oats. Walter Lamplugh Brooksbank esq. and Joseph Dickinson esq. are the principal landowners. The parish contains 6,342 acres, now enclosed; rateable value, £17,155; the population in 1891 was 1,180.

A School Board of 5 members was formed here 9 Feb. 1877; J. Bowly, Union hall, Whitehaven, clerk to the board; Isaac Holmes, Kirkland, attendance officer Board School (mixed), between Rowrah & Kirkland, built in 1879, for 144 children; average attendance, 144.
