Historical Description
LAZONBY is a parish and village on the west bank of the river Eden, with a station on the Midland railway; 5 miles east from Plumpton station on the London and North Western railway, 7 north-north-east from Penrith, 1 south from Kirkoswald, 15 south-by-east from Carlisle, and 277 from London; in the Mid division of the county, Leath ward and petty sessional division, union and county court district of Penrith, rural deanery of Penrith East, archdeaconry and diocese of Carlisle. A scheme for supplying the village with water by gravitation was carried out in 1891 at a cost of £3,100, defrayed by a special rate; and a system of sewerage was completed in 1894, at a cost of £400. The church of St. Nicholas, erected in 1863, at a cost of £5,000, wholly defrayed by the late Lieut.-Col. Henry Dundas Maclean and Mrs. Maclean of Lazonby Hall, in place of the former church, a plain but ancient building of stone, covered with rough cast, is an edifice of local red sandstone, consisting of chancel, nave of four bays, north aisle and a western tower containing a turret clock and one large bell: the lower stage of the tower forms a baptistry. On the chancel floor is a stone inscribed to the Rev. Thomas Myers, LL.B., 36 years vicar here, and 24 years vicar of Croglin, d. 26 Feb. 1826: and on the floor of the nave is the gravestone of a priest, probably of the 14th century. The communion plate includes a chalice, dated 1581, and a paten, given in 1745 by the widow of the Rev. J. Wilkinson. The church affords 250 sittings. In the churchyard stands the shaft of an ancient cross, said to be of pro-Norman date, and now surmounted by a curious sundial: here also is a slab bearing two crosses, and a fir-tree reputed to be about 200 years old. The registers date from the year 1538, and include those of Plumpton Wall until 1836. The living was declared a rectory 13 Aug. 1867; net yearly value, £420, with residence, in the gift of the bishop of Carlisle, and held since 1877 by the Rev. Barton Worsley Wilson M.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge. There is a Wesleyan chapel here, built in 1850, and a Primitive Methodist chapel, erected in 1847. A lecture hall, reading-room and library were founded in 1858 at a cost of about £600; the present building, erected in 1866 by public subscription, was endowed by John Abbott esq. of Halifax. The library contains over 1,000 volumes, and the lecture hall will seat 200 persons. An auction mart is held every alternate Monday for the sale of farm stock and produce. The Lazonby Floral and Horticultural Society’s show is held in August. On Castlerigg farm are vestiges of Roman encampments, and on another portion of the same farm are the remains of a castle, bearing signs of having been moated. Urns, containing bones and ashes, have been found on the fells, and on Lazonby Fell cairns and a grooved rock for sharpening celts have been met with. A Roman road runs from north to south through the parish, and is intersected by another which leads on through Salkeld. Lazonby Hall, the seat of John Dalrymple Maclean esq., J.P. is a beautiful modern mansion, standing on an eminence 1 mile from the village, and commanding extensive and picturesque views of the surrounding country. In the centre of the parish is an extensive range of moorland, portions of which are planted with firs; it abounds with freestone, which is extensively worked for building purposes and for making barley millstones. Quantities of cranberries grow in the marshes and on the fells. On the northern portion of the parish stands Barron-wood, formerly a noble forest of oaks, belonging to Sir Ricbd. Geo. Musgrave bart. A mile south of this wood is a rock rising to a considerable height, and containing an artificial cave, commonly called “Sampson’s cave,” or the “Giant’s chamber.” Sir Richard George Musgrave, bart., who is lord of the manor, the Duke of Devonshire, K.G., J. D. Maclean esq. J.P. of Lazonby Hall, and Mrs. Dixon, of Low Plains, are the principal landowners. There are allotments here of 4 ½ acres, let by the parish council, under the Local Government Act, this being the only place in the union which has taken advantage of the act. The arable land is very fertile, generally of light gravelly soil, in parts loamy; the subsoil, gravel, sand, and sandstone rock; the bottom portion, near the rivers Petteril and Eden, clay. The chief crops are turnips, potatoes, oats; breeding and rearing cattle and sheep is carried on extensively. The area is 8,308 acres; rateable value, £7,901. The population in 1891 was 719.
The National School (mixed), erected in 1863, for 130 children; average attendance 56 boys, 51 girls; the school has the benefit of a charity of £200, left by the late Thomas Hall, of Brackenbank, who died in 1850, the interest to be applied annually in promoting the education of children of both sexes.
