Historical Description

LORTON is a township and parish, formed 11 Sept. 1883, out of parts of Brigham parish, portions of the parochial chapelry of Lorton, and all the isolated portion of Buttermere chapelry. The parish comprises the villages of High and Low Lorton, and parts of the townships of Brackenthwaite and Whinfell, and is in the Cockermouth division of the county, ward of AlIerdale-above-Derwent, Derwent petty sessional division, Cockermouth union, Cockermouth and Workington county court district, rural deanery of Cockermouth, archdeaconry of Westmorland and diocese of Carlisle.

Low Lorton is on the east bank of the river Cocker, 4 miles south from Cockermouth station on the Cockermouth, Keswick and Penrith section of the London and North Western railway.

High Lorton is about half a mile east, and adjoins the road from Cockermouth to Keswick.

The church of St. Cuthbert, between High and Low Lorton, is a plain but substantial edifice of stone, in the Transition style, consisting of chancel, nave, baptistery, vestry, and an embattled tower with pinnacles, containing one bell: there are 200 sittings. The register of baptisms dates from the year 1556; marriages 1538, and burials 1548. The living is a vicarage, gross yearly value £153, net £144, in the gift of the Bishop of Carlisle, and held since 1891 by the Rev. William Henry Cockett, of St. Bees. The vicarage house was erected (1892—3) at a cost of £1,750, granted by the Ecclesiastical Commissioners. There is a Wesleyan Methodist chapel at High Lorton, built in 1840. At High Lorton is also a famous yew tree, referred to by Wordsworth in the lines beginning:-“There is a yew tree, pride of Lorton vale.” Lorton valley is traversed by the river Cocker in its course northward from Crummock water to Cockermouth; the vale may be explored from its southern end near Scalehill, at the head of the lake, on the west side of which, and about three miles distant, is Scale Force, which descends from a height of 156 feet, and has a single leap of 120 feet into the gorge below; the scenery of the vale is agreeably diversified with woods and scattered homesteads; on the west is Whin Fell and Low Fell, and on the east Grassmoor, Grisedale Pike (2,503 feet), Lorton Fell, and Wythop and Kirk Fells; the Whit beck falls into the Cocker at High Lorton. There are flax and thread spinning works. Lorton Park is the residence of the Misses Harbord. Lorton Hall, the seat of Anthony Joseph Steele Dixon esq. is an ancient mansion, erected about the time of the Restoration, but has been altered by additions of modern mediaeval character. Oak Hill is the residence of William Lancaster Alexander esq. and Kirk Fell House, the residence of Mrs. Whiteside; Armaside House is the residence of William Upton Armstrong esq. Lord Leconfield is lord of the manor. The principal landowners are Anthony Joseph S. Dixon J.P. the Misses Harbord, William L. Alexander J.P. John Wilson and Wilkinson Jennings. The soil is light and gravelly; subsoil, gravel and stone. The chief crops are oats, turnips and some pasture land The area of the township is 5,312 acres; rateable value, £3,375; the population in 1891 was 377 in the township and 492 in the ecclesiastical parish.

Lorton General School (mixed), erected in 1839, enlarged in 1859, & again in 1895, & endowed with Bragg & Bowe's & Dover's charities, now producing about £11 a year; the school will hold 120 children; average attendance, 92.
