Historical Description
NENTHEAD is a village on the river Nent, 5 miles south-east of Alston, and was formed into an ecclesiastical parish 2 Jan. 1846, from Alston civil parish; it is in the Mid division, of the county, Leath ward and petty sessional division, union and county court district of Alston, rural deanery of Hexham, archdeaconry of Northumberland and diocese of Newcastle. The church of St. John, erected in 1845, is an edifice of stone in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch, and a western turret containing one bell: the pulpit, reading desk and communion; rails of carved oak were the gift of the late Rev. H. Salvin, vicar of Alston: the organ, previously in St. Augustine's, Alston, was re-erected here in 1882, at a cost of £80: the church was restored in 1876, at a cost of £600, raised by subscription, and affords 400 sittings. The register dates from the year 1845. The living is a vicarage, endowed in 1880, from various sources, with a sum of £3,052, net yearly value £106, with residence, garden and 1 ½ acres of glebe, and held since 1878 by the Rev. Charles Berry, of St. Aidan's. There is a Wesleyan chapel, built in 1873, and a Primitive Methodist chapel, erected in 1823, re-built in 1853 and restored in 1875. The village of Nenthead, the chief seat of the Alston Moor lead-mining, is built on a hill slope, from which the different entrances to the lead mines are visible. The mines, which extend for miles, are the property of the Lords of the Admiralty, and leased by the Vieille Montagna Zinc Co. and employ 350 hands. The smelting mill, erected about 1764, is a large building which, has been improved at different times. The old Market House, erected about 1825, is a building of stone, with a tower containing a clock; it was formerly occupied by butchers, who held a weekly market. The Nenthead Working Men’s Reading Room and Circulating Library was formed in 1882. The Vieille Montagna Zinc Co. provide the rooms and coal and light free; there is a good supply of the leading periodicals and daily papers, and a library of 800 volumes; there are now (1896) 152 members, who pay a small subscription. The Baths and Washhouses are the property of the Vieille Montagne Zinc Co.; the building, formerly a school, was converted to its present uses in, 1867, and is open to the inhabitants on payment of a small sum. Charity.-Charles Langhorne esq. by his will dated June 26, 1802, devised property, mortgages &c. which were sold, and the money invested in the purchase of £777 2s. 1d. stock; the interest to be divided annually on the 24th December to the poor of the parish resident at or above Nenthall.
The Agricultural Society, formed in 1875, now (1896) numbers 100 members, who hold a show annually in September. A flower show is also held in August. The Nenthead Improvement Association was formed in, 1893, and has 20 members. The Lords of the Admiralty and the Vieille Montage Zinc Co. are the principal landowners. The chief crops are grass. The area is included with, Alston; the population in 1891 was 1,013.
