Historical Description
PLUMPTON WALL is a township and village on the river Petteril and on the road from Penrith to Carlisle, and wag formed into a parish 4 March, 1873, out of Lazonby, Hesket-in-the-Forest and Penrith; it has a station on the London and North-Western railway, and is about 5 miles north from Penrith, in the Mid division of the county, Leath ward and petty sessional division, union, and county court district of Penrith, rural deanery of Penrith East, and archdeaconry and diocese of Carlisle. The church of St. John the Evangelist, situated in the hamlet of Salkeld Gate, and erected in 1767, is a plain building of stone, consisting of nave, west porch, and a western belfry containing 1 bell. The separate registers date from the year 1828; all earlier entries are in the Lazonby registers. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £300, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Carlisle, and held since 1879 by the Rev. Henry Mortimer Kennedy M.A. of Trinity College, Dublin. Here is a Wesleyan chapel, built in 1888 at a cost of £320, and seating 130 persons. A small memorial has been erected here to police constable J. Byrne, on the spot where he was murdered, by three Netherby burglars, while engaged in the execution of his duty. In this township are the remains of a Roman station, supposed by some to be the Voreda of Antonine and Richard of Cirencester, but now known as “Old Penrith,” or more commonly, “Castlesteads.” Horsley fixed here the station Brementenracum, which, however, the Rev. J. Maughan, rector of Bewcastle, assigned in 1868 to Bonstead an Burgh-upon-Sands. The ramparts of the station here are still prominently defined, and enclose a great mass of ruined buildings. On the traditional site of old Penrith, east of the camp, extensive remains have been met with, and about ¼ mile south is a Roman well lined with stone. In 1801 a fibula of gold, ornamented with figures of bears and griffins, was found here, and in 1813 five altars with figures of deities in high relief. In 1811, during the removal of part of the east wall, numerous Roman silver coins were met with, ranging in date from A.D, 125 to 307. In 1817, a square well of excellent water was discovered, and various inscriptions on altars and tablets, dedicated by cohorts of Gauls and others, have been dug up from time to time. The Duke of Devonshire K.G. and the Earl of Lonsdale, are lords of the manor. The Earl of Lonsdale, Joseph Simpson esq. of Roman Way, the trustees of the late Christopher Parker esq. of Petteril Green, Joseph Harris esq. of Calthwaite Hall, Mrs. Dixon, of Low Plain, and George Robinson esq. of Green Lanes, are the principal landowners. The soil is very fertile, consisting chiefly of a light gravelly nature; subsoil, gravel and sand, producing good crops of turnips, potatoes, barley, and oats. The area of the township is 3,040 acres; rateable value, £3,299; the population in 1891 was 317, ecclesiastical parish, 600.
A School Board of 5 members was formed 13 Oct. 1882, with Hesketh-in-the-Wall & Penrith contributory, each sending one member; C. N, Arnison, Penrith, clerk to the board.
School, Salkeld Gate (mixed), endowed with about £100 in Consols, bequeathed 10 May, 1759, by the will of John Scott, of Hallrigg, & now producing £3 yearly; the school will hold 108 children; average attendance, 88.
