Historical Description

SCALEBY is a parish divided into townships, called East and West Scaleby, the village of Scaleby is in the west township, 4 ½ miles north-east from Harker station on the North British railway, and 6 ½ north-east from Carlisle, in the Northern division of the county, Eskdale ward, union and petty sessional division of Longtown, county court district of Brampton, rural deanery of Carlisle North, and archdeaconry and diocese of Carlisle. The church of All Saints, in the west township, was thoroughly restored in 1861 at a cost of nearly £1,000, and is an ancient edifice of stone, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and an embattled western tower with pinnacles, containing 2 bells of considerable antiquity: in the church, are the remains of a Roman altar, the font bears the date 1707; the church affords 180 sittings. The registers of baptisms and burials date from the year 1724; marriages, from 1725. The living is a rectory, average tithe rent-charge £25, net yearly value £173, with 41 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Carlisle, and held since 1896 by the Rev. George Thompson, of St. Aidans and the University of Durham. The rectory house was built in 1863. There is a Wesleyan chapel at Scaleby hill, erected in 1828. In 1895 a public hall was erected at the cost of R. A. Allison esq. M.P. on a site given by Mr. J. Hind, of the Nook. Jackson’s Charity, consisting of 1 rood of land, and £40 invested in personal securities, produce together £2 10s. yearly, which is distributed amongst the poor. Watson’s Charity of £100, is applied to the relief of the poor, and to the education of poor children. Scaleby Castle, half a mile south, and now the residence of Mrs. Fawcett, appears to have been originally built in the 12th century; from the 13th to the 15th century it belonged to the powerful family of Tilliol, and was crenellated or fortified in 1307, under Royal license, by Robert Tilliol; on the death, in 1435, of the last male heir of this family, the estates were divided between his sisters, as co-heiresses; the castle then passed to the Colville family and the Musgraves, of Hayton, and subsequently became the property of the Gilpins, and afterwards of the Fawcett family, and it now belongs to Capt. William Pery Standish, of New Park, Brockenhurst, Hants. It is approached from the village by an avenue of oaks, half a mile in length, planted by one of the Gilpins at the close of the 16th century, and the buildings, as now standing, surround a courtyard; the oldest portion of the structure being a massive pele tower of the 14th century, standing at one angle on the west side, but now dismantled and roofless; it was probably erected by one of the Tilliols, and is about 30 by 40 feet externally, with walls 7 feet thick, in the basement is a barrel-vaulted chamber, measuring about 24 by 15 feet, and lighted by narrow and deeply splayed loop openings, and there were three floors above; in the 15th century a large hall, 29 by 24 feet, was built on to the east side.

The buildings on the west side of the courtyard were erected in the 15th century, and comprise the gatehouse, which has a square-embattled tower flanking it on one side, and an octagonal tower, 36 feet in diameter, on the other. The entrance doorway is six feet in width, and immediately above it, within a small framed panel, are the carved arms of the Gilpin family; higher up in the walls is a square recess enclosing a shield of arms with a lion rampant, the arms of Tilliol. About 1730, the fabric being then in a ruinous condition, was so far repaired by its then owner as to become habitable, and the late Mr. Rowland Fawcett effected further repairs; in 1834—5 the late Mr. James Fawcett rebuilt or re-constructed the west side, and refaced it at a cost of £2,800, and in 1854—5 he also repaired and re-modelled the east side, which had been erected by his great-grandfather, one of the Gilpins, in the 17th century; and in the course of this work the ancient tapestry in one of the rooms was taken down and renovated, and some rooms were panelled with old oak, brought from Carlisle Cathedral; he also built stabling, laundries, and offices, and erected a new lodge with materials from Carlisle. The castle grounds, once surrounded by a moat, are now only of small extent. The inner moat has been partially filled up, but the portion in front of the castle remains, and is now a piece of ornamental water. The outer moat, over which was a drawbridge, traces of which are still discernible, has always been kept full, and is crossed by a stone bridge. Scaleby Hall, a handsome mansion of stone, was erected in 1834 by Henry Fairer esq. and in 1862 was purchased from his representatives by Robert Andrew Allison esq. M.P., J.P., D.L. who is the present occupier. R. A. Allison esq. M.P., D.L., J.P. The Dean and Chapter of Carlisle; Mr. J. Hind, The Nook; Mr. William Dalton, Bar Close; Mr. John Marshall, Stone Knowle; Mr. Thomas James, Highberries; Mr. John Sutton, Woodhead; the Misses Fawcett, of Painswick, Gloucestershire; R. C. Mooresome-Maud esq. and Miss Graham, and the Rev. Joseph Hudson M.A. vicar of Crosby-on-Eden, are the principal landowners. The soil is various; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are good meadow hay, oats, turnips, and potatoes. The area is 3,646 acres; rateable value, £3,454; the population in 1891 was 388.

The hamlets of Bar Close, 6 miles north-east-by-north; Long Park, 5 miles north-north-east, and Stone Knowe, 5 ½ miles north-north-east of Carlisle, are in this parish.

National School (mixed & infants), for 80 children; average attendance, 46.
