Historical Description

SETMURTHY was formed into a parish in 1835 from Brigham; it is from 2 to 5 miles from Cockermouth, and the eastern portion almost adjoins the Bassenthwaite Lake station on the Cockermouth, Keswick and Penrith railway, and is in the Cockermouth division of the county, ward of Allerdale-above-Derwent, petty sessional division of Derwent, union and county court district of Cockermouth and Workington, rural deanery of Cockermouth, archdeaconry of Westmorland and diocese of Carlisle. The church of St. Barnabas, erected in 1794, at a cost of £107, and restored in 1870, is a plain building of local stone, and consists of nave and a turret, containing one bell: the church, affords 100 sittings. The register of baptisms dates from the year 1759, previous to which entries were made at Cockermouth; the register of marriages and burials dates only from 1835. The living is a perpetual curacy, net yearly value £70, including glebe, in the gift of the Rev. Canon G. R. Hoskins M.A. and Miss Mary Hoskins, and held since 1893 by the Rev. Daniel Harrison M.A. of Caius College, Cambridge. Huthwaite Hall, standing on the old road along the Derwent valley to Ousensland bridge, 2 ½ miles from Cockermouth, and now occupied as a farmhouse by Mr. John Tremble, is an ancient mansion of the 16th century, and once the seat of a branch of the Swinburne family, originally of Swinburne, Northumberland; the house consists of a rectangular gabled block, two storeys in height, and measuring about 48 by 45 feet, at the south end of which is a wing projecting towards the rear about; 12 feet; the principal entrance is through a squareheaded doorway, immediately above which is a large oblong stone divided into two panels; one panel displays the royal shield of the Tudors, with supporters, apparently greyhounds; and the other panel contains an inverted shield charged with 3 roundles within a bordure; flanking the whole are small figures (possibly representing a bishop and a noble) under crocketed canopies, supporting a bold comice, which in turn carries similar figures, and a second cornice enclosing a smaller tablet, inscribed in raised capitals with the following rhyming inscription:— IOHN: SWYNBVRN ESQVIER: & ELIZABETH HIS WIFE: DID MAKE COST OF THIS: WORK IN THE DAIS OF THER LYFE: ANO. DMI. 1581: ANO RAE 23. The windows are mullioned, and one has an embattled transom and trefoil head; there is a good baluster staircase of black oak, and some oak-panelled doors and wainscotting. The Hall is now the property of Major Andrew Green Thompson J.P. Higham is the property and residence of the Rev. Canon G. R. Hoskins M.A., J.P. and Miss Hoskins; the mansion, a noble structure of stone in a mixed style of Gothic and Italian, is delightfully situated at a considerable elevation in its own well-wooded grounds of about goo acres, from whence charming views of the surrounding country and of Bassenthwaite Lake may be obtained. Lord Leconfield is lord of the manor; the Rev. Canon G. R. Hoskins M.A. Major Andrew Green-Thompson, of Bridekirk, and Sir Wilfrid Lawson bart. M.P. are the principal landowners. The soil is loam and clay; subsoil, slate rock. The chief crops are oats, turnips and grass. The area is 2,664 acres of land and 116 of water; rateable value, £2,144; the population in 1891 was 139.

Parochial School (mixed), built in 1794 & endowed with about 56 ½ acres of land & invested money, producing £40 yearly; it will hold 30 children; average attendance, 18.

A new school is now (June, 1896) in course of erection.
