Civil & Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction
Historical Description
SILLOTH is a village, port and sea-bathing place, and was formed into an ecclesiastical parish 6 Feb. 1872, out of St. Paul’s, Holme Low, in the parish of Holme Cultram; it has a terminal station on the North British railway from Carlisle, and is 21 ¼ miles west from Carlisle and 16 from Burgh; it consists of a narrow slip running along the coast from Skinburness on the north, to Wolsty on the south, in the Northern division of the county, Allerdale-below-Derwent ward and petty sessional division, union and county court district of Wigton, rural deanery of Wigton, and archdeaconry and diocese of Carlisle. It has a most salubrious climate, and is very pleasantly situated on the coast of Silloth bay. Until 1857 there were only a very few scattered houses, but since the formation of the railway by the Carlisle and Silloth Bay Railway and Dock Company, houses have sprung up in all directions, and it is now in direct communication with Carlisle and all parts of the country. The same company, in 1858, constructed a floating dock and harbour, 600 feet in length and 300 feet wide, with an area of 6 acres, and the dock is closed by two water gates 60 feet wide and worked by hydraulic power; at the dock are two cranes for loading and unloading, worked by hydraulic power and lifting 5 tons; there is a branch line from the North British railway to the dock, and a wooden pier which extends upwards of 1,000 feet into the sea. On the coast between Silloth and Skinburness is a small wooden lighthouse giving a fixed light. A steamer runs to Liverpool daily, and to Dublin every Tuesday and Friday. There is a fair amount of trade with home and foreign ports. Christ Church, erected at a cost of £4,410, and consecrated in November, 1871, is a building of stone in the Early Decorated style, consisting of chancel, nave of five bays, aisles, and a tower with spire containing 8 bells and a clock, placed to the memory of Mr. G. Moore, of Whitehall: the church affords 500 sittings. The registers date from the year 1872. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £88, in the gift of trustees, and held since 1893 by the Rev. Herbert Aylwin. There is a large Congregational chapel here, built in 1862, and seating 300. The Wesleyan chapel is a building in the Gothic style, erected in 1875, and seating 200 persons. The Primitive Methodist chapel, built in 1887, will seat 150. The English Presbyterian church, built in 1887, affords 200 sittings. The Convalescent Home, erected in 1829, has beds for 90 patients; it is supported by voluntary contributions, and managed by a committee. There are two good hotels, the “Queen’s” and the “Solway,” both commanding fine views of the Criffel and Solway, and replete with every comfort; both are near the Golf links, and have good billiard rooms, tennis grounds and livery stables; stretching from the hotels to the shore is a green, extending in a fine walk to Skinburness; attached is a bath house with every convenience for taking hot and cold salt water baths. Two miles south of Silloth, on the coast, are the remains of Wolstey, or Wolsty, Castle, which the abbot of Holme Cultram obtained license to crenellate, 22 Edward III. (1349—50), and it became important both as a military position and place of refuge. This fortress-was the seat for nine generations of the Chamber family, previously of Holderness, and subsequently of Hanworth, Middlesex; to this family belonged Robert Chamber, abbot of Holme Cultram (1507—18) and his brothers, Thomas, abbot of Furness, and Lancelot, abbot of Peterborough. The remains of the Castle now consist only of the site and part of the ditch. The Joliffa family are lords of the manor and the principal landowners. The population in 1891 was 1,941.
