Historical Description
Stanwix - Horsley, and other modern antiquaries, have determined this to have been the Congavata of the Notitia, in which it is mentioned as the 15th station ad lineam Valli, or upon the wall, the remains of which may be distinctly seen in this vicinity.’’ "Here," says Mr. Horsley, "is the plain area of a station. There is a gentle descent to the south; and the rising for the out buildings, which the number of stones dug up prove to have stood here; and by all accounts it is upon this descent, and chiefly to the south-east, that the Roman buildings have stood. Severus's wall formed the north rampart of this station; some of the gardens of the village pass over its course, and are fenced with the stones obtained from it. The ditch may be traced distinctly from the west end of the village to the river's banks: the ridge which the wall has left is pretty eminent in many places, and may be accurately traced to the brink of the precipice above the river Eden, where it apparently terminates; but at the bottom of the precipice, near Hissopholm well, some remains are still to be seen." "On Hissopholm bank,’’ says Mr. Pennant, "are the vestiges of some dykes, describing a small square, the site of a fort to defend the pass; for the wall reached to the edge of the water, and continued to the opposite side. Possibly this was a station of cavalry; for near Hissop bank is a stupendous number of horses’ bones, exposed by the falling of a cliff." The church of Stanwix, which stands upon the Roman station, was built with the materials for the wall.
STANWIX (A. S. stan and waeg, a paved way), is a township and parish forming a populous suburb of Carlisle, in the Northern division of the county, Cumberland ward and petty sessional division, Carlisle union and county court district, rural deanery of North Carlisle, and archdeaconry and diocese of Carlisle. This suburb is beautifully seated on an eminence, and connected with the city by a stone bridge of five arches across the river Eden; it contains many elegant villas and modern houses, the residences of traders in Carlisle. The nearest railway station is at Carlisle. The church of St. Michael, believed to stand on the site of a Roman station, and erected in 1841, at a cost of £2,960, is a fine cruciform building in the Early English style, consisting of apsidal chancel, nave, transepts and a tower with pinnacles, containing a clock with three dials, presented by R. Ferguson esq. late of Harker Lodge. The church, partially destroyed by fire in 1843, was subsequently restored, and an organ erected; in 1893 it was completely restored, at a cost of £1,900, under the supervision of Mr. C. J. Ferguson F.S.A, architect, of Carlisle: the chancel has received an apse with seven lights, a new organ chamber has been erected and beating apparatus fixed. The church affords 500 sittings. In the northern part of the churchyard the foundations of Roman buildings have been frequently met with. The registers date from the year 1660. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £275, arising chiefly from the tithes of 7 different townships, the greater tithes of 5 of these being appropriated to the Dean and Chapter of Carlisle. There are 3 acres of glebe, and the living is in the gift of the Bishop of Carlisle, and held since 1880 by the Rev. John Ravenshaw Wood M.A. of Christ Church, Oxford. The vicarage house stands adjacent to the church, and commands a fine prospect of the surrounding country. A complete list of rectors and vicars from A.D. 1300 is preserved. There are charities for the poor, of which Dr. Benson and Mr. Monkhouse Graham, of Tarraby, and Miss Patrickson, were the founders; and these were augmented about 1856 by Mr. and Mrs. Sarby, of Stanwix. The capital moneys are all now invested, with the approval of the Charity Commissioners, and produce yearly about £25, which sum is partly assigned to the relief of the poor and otherwise devoted to purposes of education, and is distributed annually by the vicar and churchwardens. A cemetery of 6 acres was formed in 1887, at a cost of £3,500, with mortuary chapel and curator’s house; it is under the control of a Burial Board of 7 members. “The Welcome,” established in 1888, is a reading room of a religious and philanthropic character with gymnasium attached. The convent of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, on St. Ann’s hill, was designed by Mr. Charles Walker, architect, of Newcastle-on-Tyne, and opened in September, 1892. A limited number of young ladies are received here as borders, and there is also an attached day school for the children of the neighbourhood under the care of the Rev. Mother Superior. The Home for Friendless Girls was established in 1871. Training for domestic purposes and a plain education is given to each girl, and situations are obtained for girls when competent. The home will hold 22 girls, and there are now (1897) 8. The management is under the control of a committee of ladies; Miss Dorothy Bell, matron. KnowefieId in this parish, one of the largest nurseries in the United Kingdom, covering more than 200 acres, belongs to Messrs. Little and Ballantyne, nurserymen and seedsmen to H.M. The Queen and H.R.H. The Prince of Wales. The chief feature at these nurseries is the production of forest trees and ornamental trees and shrubs; the cultivation of roses and fruit trees is very largely carried on; a quantity of stove and greenhouse plants is also produced in the extensive glass department. This firm has a very large export trade. A manual Fire Enigne station, No. 8, is at the post office. At Stanwix was a Roman station, of which Hadrian's wall formed the northern boundary. Its exact limits are at present unknown, but the church and churchyard stand within its area, and graves often have to be dug through strong masonry, and it has been estimated that it probably contained about 2 ½ acres. Several carved stones and portions of statues have been found within the station, but no inscriptions, and the identity of the fort is much disputed. Dr. Bruce does not venture upon any conjecture, but other writers have regarded it in turn as Congavata, Aballaba, Axelodunum, and Tunnocelum. The Duke of Devonshire K.G. is lord of the manor and the principal landowner. The soil is various; subsoil, loam. The chief crops are bay, wheat, oats, turnips and potatoes. The area of the parish is 6,493 acres of land and 153 of water; rateable value, £22,346; the population in 1891 was 3,181 in the township and 2,357 in the ecclesiastical parish.
A School Board of 5 members, for Stanwix, with Cargo annexed, was formed 30th January, 1882; William Dobinson, clerk to the board; George Liddle, 52 Etterby street, attendance officer. Board schools, built in 1885, for 112 boys & 112 girls & infants; average attendance, 98 boys, 110 girls & 79 infants.
