Historical Description

STAPLETON is a large parish and township on the river Line, 6 miles south-east from Penton station, on the North, British railway, 8 north from Brampton, 9 east-by-north from Longtown, in the Northern division of the county. Eskdale ward, Brampton county court district and union, and petty sessional division of Longtown, rural deanery of Brampton and archdeaconry and diocese of Carlisle. A foot bridge, crosses the river Line from Roweltown to Solport. The church of St. Mary, rebuilt in 1830, is an edifice of stone, in a modern style of Gothic, consisting of chancel, nave, porch, and a western embattled tower with, pinnacles, containing one bell, cast by Burgess, and Hayton, of Carlisle, in 1830: there are 165 sittings. The registers date from the year 1725. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £155, with glebe (valued at £80), and residence, in the gift of the Earl of Carlisle, and held since 1873 by the Rev. Thomas Fell, of St. Bees. There is a Wesleyan chapel at Roweltown, built many years ago by an old resident in the parish. Coal is now obtained in this parish, but the industry is of little importance, only employing a few hands. Irving’s Charity of about £85 in Consols, produces £2 6s. 8. yearly, of which £2 is applied to educational purposes, and the remainder distributed to the poor of Stapleton township. Sir S. Heward's Charity, bequeathed in 1843, and now producing £9 19s. a year, is also applied to the support of education in the parish. The Earl of Carlisle is lord of the manor of Stapleton township. Sir Richard James Graham bart. of Netherby, is lord of the manors of Solport, Belbank and Trough townships. The principal landowners are Messrs. Parker, Lieut.-Col. Aitchison, and Robert Kyle. The soil is various (light and heavy); subsoil, clay. The chief crops are oats, turnips and potatoes. The area of Stapleton township is 4,721 acres of land and 23 of water; rateable value, £3,200; the population in 1891 was 378 in the township and 777 in the ecclesiastical parish.
