Historical Description
ULDALE is a parish, township and village, on the river Ellen, 5 miles south-east from Mealsgate station on the Maryport and Carlisle railway, and 9 south-by-west from Wigton, in the Mid division of the county, ward of Allerdale-below-Derwent, Derwent petty sessional division, Wigton union and county court district, rural deanery of Wigton, and archdeaconry and diocese of Carlisle. The church of St. James, standing about half a mile from the village, on the road to Ireby, is a small but ancient building of stone, consisting of chancel, nave, porch, and a western turret containing 2 bells: the chancel was rebuilt in 1837, and has mural tablets to Joseph Gilibanks, d. 1853, and Mary, his wife, d. 1878, and one to Jackson Gillbanks, d. 1878: there are 150 sittings. Belonging to the church is a cylindrical case of cuir bouilli, in which a chalice was formerly kept, and supposed to date from a period anterior to 1571. The registers date legibly from 1642. The church of St. John the Evangelist, built in 1868, at the cost of Professor Cape, of Croydon, Surrey, in memory of his father, the Rev. Jonathan Cape M.A. rector here from 1830, is an edifice of native stone in the Gothic style, consisting of chancel, nave, and a south-west tower with spire, containing 1 bell: the east window is stained.
The living is a rectory, net yearly value £150, in the gift of Miss Gough, and held since 1879 by the Rev. Jabez Greenwood B.D, of St. John’s College, Cambridge. Tithes commuted at £130; average £99, net yearly value £141, with 22 acres of glebe, and residence. Charities:-Dalston's Charity consists of 3 acres 1 rood 13 poles of land, the rent of which amounting to £4 4s. yearly, is distributed in money to the poor: Cape’s Charity of £8 14s. yearly, also for distribution, is derived from £200 invested in mortgages: Thomlinson’s Charity consists of £50 invested in personal securities, and produces £1 6s. yearly which is likewise distributed. A few years ago an Early British burial place and several urns were found here. A Roman road ran through the parish. On the Common are two Roman camps; near Orthwaite Hall is another, in which a bronze tripod was found. Lord Leconfield is lord of the manor. Sir Wilfrid Lawson bart. M.P. Miss Gough, Mrs. Fothergill, John S. Parkin esq. of 11 New square, Lincoln’s Inn, London W.C. and Ernest Henry Railton esq. of Snittlegarth, are the chief landowners. The soil is clay and light loam; the subsoil, gravelly and strong clay. The area is 5,789 acres; rateable value, £2,365; the population in 1891 was 222.
Orthwaite, 2 miles south, consists of a few farms.
Grammar School (mixed), founded in 1726 by Mr. Matthew Caldbeck, of Ruthwaite, & endowed with 25 acres 2 roods 27 poles of land & £20 in Savings Bank Securities, producing together £35 18s. yearly, & in 1868 the Rev. J. Cape left £4,000 for further endowment; the present school, built in 1726, will hold 60 children; average attendance, 40; the school is managed by a body of 7 governors, under a new scheme of the Charity Commissioners.
