Historical Description
WALTON, consisting of the townships of High and Low Walton, is a parish and small village on the north bank of the river Irthing, 4 ½ miles north-by-west from Brampton junction and 3 ½ north-west from Naworth station, both on the Newcastle and Carlisle section of the North Eastern railway, 3 north from Brampton and 10 north-west from Carlisle, in the Northern division of the county, Eskdale ward and petty sessional division, union and county court district of Brampton, rural deanery of Brampton, and archdeaconry and diocese of Carlisle. The village is pleasantly situated, and commands a very extensive view of the valley of the Irthing, including Lanercost Abbey and Naworth Castle. The church of St. Mary, erected in 1870 at a cost of £2,300, in place of the former church, a small edifice, is a building of local stone in the Gothic style, from designs by Mr. Paley, architect, of Lancaster, and consists of chancel, nave, north aisle and a north-west tower with spire, containing one bell, weighing 10 cwt.; it is the largest in the deanery, and was cast in 1876 by John Warner and Sons, of London: the stained east window is a memorial to various members of the Johnson family, of Castlesteads, 1821—65; in the south aisle is a memorial window to Captain Charles E. Whinyates, d. 27th February, 1872, erected by his brother officers; and in the north aisle another to Joseph Thirlwall, d. 12th September, 1874, and Isabella, his wife, d. 28th June, 1884: the pulpit, lectern and choir stalls are of carved oak: the church affords 200 sittings. The registers of baptisms and burials date from 1684; marriages from 1687. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £173, with 95 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Rev. W. Dacre, vicar of Irthington, and held since 1887 by the Rev. John Robinson, Lic. Theol, of University College, Durham. Here is a Primitive Methodist chapel, erected in 1858, and seating 100 persons. In 1887, 15 lime trees were planted in the centre of the village to commemorate the Queen’s Jubilee. Castlesteads, about, a mile south-east of the village, was the Roman station called by Dr. Bruce “Walton House,” and by Horsley “Cambeck Fort,” and has been regarded by most, antiquaries as the “Petriana” of the “Notitia”; the site, a little to the north-east of the present mansion, and covering an area of 2 ½ acres, is now occupied by gardens, the distance from the wall being about 400 yards south, and from the presumed course of the vallum about 100 yards. Within the limits of the station many important inscriptions on altars and tablets, and some carved figures have been met with, but the identity of this station with “Petriana” is still in doubt, and substantial reasons have been advanced for preferring Lanercost (which see). The late Rev. John Maughan, rector of Bewcastle in 1870, suggested it, mainly on etymological grounds, as the site of “Aballaba.” An inscribed altar was found near the station in 1856, and in 1859 another, recording the presence here of the 4th Cohort of Gauls, was met with about a mile north. Castlesteads, the seat of F. Ponsonby Johnson esq. B.A., J.P. is a mansion of stone, consisting of a central facade with wings, and is situated on a declivity in a well-wooded park of 75 acres, overlooking the vale of the Irthing. The estate was purchased in 1789 by the late John Johnson esq. who also built the present house. In 1867 the house was restored by the late owner, the wings being raised one storey. F. Ponsonby Johnson esq. is lord of the manor and the principal landowner. The soil in the high district is black loam; subsoil, clay; other parts a sandy loam; subsoil, sand The chief crops are turnips, potatoes, corn and pasture. The area is 3,811 acres; rateable value, £3,535; the population in 1891 was 335.
Walton High Rigg was the birthplace of William Steele (1795-1850), author of the “Beauties of Gilsland” and other poems.
Parochial Endowed School (mixed), built in 1859, at a cost of £252, for 90 children; average attendance, 48. The endowment, derived from £100 left by Miss Elizabeth Johnson, and from £90 left by James Boustead, of Cumrenton, & invested in the Government Savings Bank, and John Hetherington, of Nickies hill, £2 3s.; the school bell, formerly at the church, dates from 1731.
