WESTWARD is a township and parish, 3 miles south-east from Wigton, and about 4 miles from Curthwaite station on the Carlisle and Maryport railway, in the Mid-division of the county, ward of Allerdale-below-Derwent, union, county court district and petty sessional division of Wigton, rural deanery of Wigton and archdeaconry and diocese of Carlisle. It is bounded on the east and north by Cumberland ward, and on the south and west by Caldbeck and Bolton parishes, having on its eastern limits the stream which forms the Wampool river, and on its southern boundary the brooks that give rive to the river Waver, The church of St. Hilda, which stands on an elevated plot of land called Church hill, in the Stoneraise division of the parish, is a small and plain edifice of stone, consisting of chancel, nave, went porch, and turret containing 1 bell: the stained east window is a memorial to William Skelton, d. 3 Sept. 1885, and his two sons, William Kirkup Skelton, d. 22 April, 1867, and John Skelton, d. 8 Jan. 1866: the church was restored subsequent to 1873, at a cost of £600, and the interior in 1896 at a cost of £200: there are 185 sittings. The register dates from the year 1605. The living is a vicarage, assigned as a living for a minor Canon of Carlisle, 6 Feb. 1872; net yearly value £285, with residence and about 45 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Carlisle, and held since 1883 by the Rev. George Mercer Tandy B.A. of St. John’s College, Cambridge. Old Carlisle, about 1 ½ miles north of the church, and about the same distance south of Wigton, is the site of the extensive Roman station, Olenacum, situated on a Roman road leading from Carlisle to Ellenborough; the camp, besides its walls, the ruins of which remain, was defended by an outer vallum, with a ditch on either side of it; the four gateways of the station are still traceable, and there are considerable remains of its interior and exterior buildings, though now ruinous, and overgrown with grass and bushes; sacrificial instruments, images, statues, altars, coins &c. have been found here in considerable numbers and include an altar of the time of Commodus, A.D. 191, erected by the Ala Augusta, and now at Lowther Castle. There are also in the parish many vestiges of encampments, particularly near a place called “The Height,” where several extensive trenches may be traced. Charities:-The schools’ charity of 2 acres of land produces £9 yearly; the charities invested in Consols are Barwise’s of £ 1 16s. 8d. yearly, Jackson’s charity is now lost, Jefferson’s of £295 produces £8 2S. 8d. per annum, Pape's £20, bequeathed in 1778, produces 11s. 4d. a year, Hodgson's of £45, bequeathed in 1850, produces £1 5s. 8d. yearly, there is also Hodge’s bequest of £600, yielding £21 yearly. All these charities are now applied to the maintenance of the school. Isle Kirk Hall, about 1 mile west of the church, and now a farmhouse, was once the site of a hermitage or religious house, dedicated to St. Hilda, and granted by King John to the abbey of Holme Cultram. Here are excellent quarries of red freestone and slate; the higher grounds abound with limestone. Several seams of coal also exist and there are traces of iron ore. Lord Leconfield, who is lord of the manor, Sir Musgrave Horton Brisco bart. and the Ecclesiastical Commissioners are the principal landowners. The soil which is in a high state of cultivation, consists chiefly of a strong fertile clay, with a portion of sand in Woodside quarter, and produces excellent crops of wheat, oats &c. The subsoil is clay. The area of the civil parish of Westward, including Rosley, is 13,213 acres; rateable value, £11,985; the population in 1891 was 1,052, and of Westward only 448.
