Historical Description

ALLESTREE is a parish, on the river Derwent, 2 miles north from Derby, in the Southern division of the county, hundred of Morleston and Litchurch, Belper union, Derby petty sessional division and county court district, rural deanery of Duffield, archdeaconry of Derby and diocese of Southwell. The church of St. Edmund, an, edifice of stone in the Early English style, was rebuilt and considerably enlarged in 1866—7 by the late Sir T. W. Evans bart. at a cost of about £6,000; and consists of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch and a low tower at the west end containing a clock and 3 bells, dated respectively 1790, 1781 and 1711: the only parts of the old church now remaining are the south doorway, parts of the eastern wall and the tower; the doorway is a very good example of Late Norman, the unique carving of the jambs illustrating, it is supposed, the parable of the Sower: the tower is mainly Early English of the 13th century: on the south side of the chancel is a piscina with trefoiled head, and in the north wall, under a sepulchral arch, is a floriated incised cross probably coeval with the south doorway: the old font, handed over to a neighbouring incumbent, has been unfortunately destroyed: in the chancel are many monuments to the family of Mundy, of Markeaton, from 1615 to 1836, and in the north chancel chapel others of modern date to the Evans family: there are 348 sittings. The register dates from the year 1596, and is in fair condition; there is also a volume of churchwardens accounts from 1618. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £220, including 3 ½ acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Lionel Guy Gisborne esq. and held since 1889 by the Rev. Austin West M.A. of St. John’s College, Cambridge. There are Wesleyan and Primitive Methodist chapels, the former erected in 1895, and the latter in 1871. The parochial free lending library contains 400 volumes. Allestree Hall, the seat of Lionel Guy Gisborne esq. the principal landowner, is a large but plain stone mansion, standing in a well-wooded park of 255 acres. Francis Noel Mundy esq. D.L., J.P. of Markeaton Hall, is lord of the manor. The soil is loam and gravel. The chief crops are wheat, oats and barley; there is a deal of pasture. The area is about 1,126 acres of land and 37 of water; rateable value, £6,040; the population in 1891 was 571.

National School (mixed & infants), erected in 1847 & enlarged in 1888, for 108 children & 75 infants; average attendance, 78 mixed & 70 infants.
