Historical Description

GREAT BARLOW is a village, township and parish on a bold eminence, commanding a very extensive view of a finely cultivated country, 3 ½ miles from Sheepbridge station, and 5 miles from Staveley station, both on the Midland railway, 4 miles north-west from Chesterfield, and 10 south from Sheffield, in the Chesterfield division of the county, parish of Staveley, hundred of Scarsdale, union, petty sessional division and county court district of Chesterfield, rural deanery of Dronfield, archdeaconry of Derby, and diocese of Southwell. The church of St. Lawrence is a small Norman building, consisting of chancel (added in 1867), nave, south porch, and turret containing one bell: there are four stained windows, placed here in 1874; an inscribed marble slab to Robert Barley and his wife, Margaret, dated 1469; and an ancient coffin lid with inscription, but undated: there are 245 sittings. The register dates from the year 1573. The living is a perpetual curacy, net yearly income £168, with 15 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the rector of Staveley, and held since 1879 by the Rev. Cornelius Dyson M.A. of Emmanuel College, Cambridge. There are United Free Methodist and Primitive Methodist chapels here, the former erected in 1867 and the latter in 1892. Coal and ironstone are found here in abundance, and there are also stone quarries. The charities for distribution amount to £25 16s. 7d. yearly. The Duka of Rutland K.G., G.C.B, is lord of the manor and principal landowner. Mrs. Charles Thorold, of Welham, East Retford, is also a landowner, and owner of Woodseats Hall, now occupied as a farm by Mrs. William Hulley. The soil is light; subsoil, mixed. The chief crops are wheat, oats and barley. The acreage is 3,915 acres of land and 17 of water; rateable value, £4,090; the population in 1891 was 1,107.

School.

A National School (mixed) was built with residence for master & mistress in 1872, and enlarged 1895 now to accommodate 220 children; average attendance, 140.
