Historical Description

BEIGHTON is a village and parish, most pleasantly situated on an eminence on the Yorkshire border, with a station on the main line of the Great Central railway, 4 miles north from Eckington station and 2 south from Woodhouse Mill station on the Midland railway, 10 north-east from Chesterfield and 7 south-east from Sheffield, in the North Eastern division of the county, Eckington petty sessional division, hundred of Scarsdale, union of Chesterfield, and county court district of Rotherham, rural deanery of Staveley, archdeaconry of Derby and diocese of Southwell. The approach to the village from Eckington is through a cutting in the solid rock. The church of St. Mary is an ancient building of stone, in the Norman and Perpendicular styles, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch and a western tower containing 6 bells: the church was restored in 1868: there are several stained windows and sittings for 300 persons. The register dates from the year 1653, and is in good condition. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value, £210, including 22 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Earl Manvers, and held since 1889 by the Rev. Robert Stewart Hare M.A. of Trinity College, Dublin. A Mission church is now (1899) in course of erection at Hackenthorpe, from designs by Mr. J. D. Webster, architect, of Sheffield, at an estimated cost of £2,555, towards which Earl Manvers has contributed £500, and James Hounsfield esq. of Hackenthorpe Hall, £250; the foundation stone was laid by Viscount Newark M.P. 3 June, 1898. There are Wesleyan Methodist, United Methodist and Primitive Methodist chapels here, and a Methodist chapel at Hackenthorpe. The charities for distribution amount to £36 yearly and there is a small endowment for ten free scholars. A reading and recreation room was opened in October, 1882. The Earl Manvers is lord of the manor and principal landowner, James Hounsfield esq. of Hackenthorpe Hall and John Jubb esq. of Drake House are also considerable landowners. The soil is principally light. The chief crops are wheat, oats, barley, turnips and hay. The area is 3,115 acres of land and 21 of water; rateable value, £19,006; the population in 1891 was 2,852. The parish comprises the hamlets of Hackenthorpe, 2 miles east, where scythes, sickles and reaping hooks are manufactured very extensively; Birley, 2 ½ miles east, and Sothal, ½ mile east.

A School Board of 5 members was formed Dec. 20, 1877; William Dust, Eckington, clerk; Sidney Carnall, attendance officer.

Beighton Board School, erected in 1880, enlarged in 1890, & further enlarged in 1896, for 536 boys & girls & 320 infants; average attendance, 398 boys & girls & 180 infants.

Hackenthorpe Board School, erected in 1883, for 120 boys & girls & 60 infants; average attendance, 77 boys & girls & 50 infants.
