Historical Description

BOYLESTONE is a small parish and scattered village, 4 miles north-north-east from Sudbury station on the North Staffordshire railway, south from Ashborne and 13 west from Derby, in the Western division of the county, Appletree hundred, petty sessional division of Sudbury, Uttoxeter union and county court district, rural deanery of Longford, archdeaconry of Derby and diocese of Southwell. The church of St. John the Baptist is a building of stone, erected in 1700, and consisting of chancel, nave, south aisle, south porch and a small western tower containing a clock and one bell: in the church is a brass to Roger Bickerstaff, 20 years rector of the parish: the east window is a memorial to Harriott, wife of the Rev. Tansley Hall M.A. late rector (1861—93), she died 29 April, 1883; in 1888 the chancel was restored and paved with tiles; and in 1895, memorial windows were placed in the chancel by the present rector to the Rev. Tansley Hall M.A. late rector, d. 20 Jan. 1893; and to Robert Fyson. and Maria his wife parents of the present rector: there are 200 sittings, 100 being free. The register dates from the year 1734. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £250, including 154 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of and held since 1893 by the Rev. Nicholas Isaac Hill Fyson M.A. of Worcester College, Oxford, who is also rector of Barton Blount. There are Wesleyan and Primitive Methodist chapels here, the former built in 1809 and the latter in 1846. A few charities are distributed yearly in bread and clothing. Henry Jack Cumming esq. J.P. of 2 Cambridge square, London W, who is lord of the manor, Lord Vernon and the rector are the principal landowners. The soil is rich loam; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat and beans. The area is 1,361 acres; rateable value, £2,126; the population in 1891 was 218.
