Historical Description
At the small hamlet of Bretby, situated about two miles to the south of Repton, vestiges of walls, foundations, wells, &c. have frequently been discovered. Here was likewise a castle, but the walls are entirely removed. Bretby Park, the residence of the Earl of Chesterfield, though not extensive, presents a variety of beautiful scenery. Here was formerly a magnificent old mansion, "which (says a modern writer) his lordship in his youth was persuaded, by an artful steward, to pull down, as being in a dangerous state of decay, though it was afterwards proved to have been very firm and substantial. This structure was furnished with rich tapestry and fine paintings, and was surrounded with rich tapestry and fine paintings, and was surrounded with gardens disposed after the plan of Versailles, in the old grand style, with terraces, statues, and fountains. Its demolition was sincerely regretted by its noble owner, who became much attached to the place, and actually inhabited a small building erected by the steward out of the old mansion.
BRETBY is a parish, 3 miles south from Rupton, 10 ½ south-east from Derby, 3 ¾ east-by-north from Burton-upon-Trent railway station, in the Southern division of the county, hundred of Repton and Gresley, Repton petty sessional division, union and county court district of Burton-upon-Trent, rural deanery of Repton, archdeaconry of Derby and diocese of Southwell, The church of St. Wystan, is a small but handsome edifice of stone in the Early English and Perpendicular styles, entirely rebuilt in 1877—8, at the cost of £3,845, by the late Countess of Chesterfield, and consists of chancel, nave, north aisle, south porch and a low tower at the west end, containing 5 modern bells: the east window is a memorial to George Augustus Frederick, 6th Earl of Chesterfield, d. 1 June, 1866, and there are smilias memorials to George Philip Cecil Arthur, 7th Earl of Chesterfield, d. 21 Oct. 1883, to his sister and heiress Evelyn, 1st wife of Henry, late Earl of Carnarvon; she died 27 Jan. 1875; and one placed in 1896 by Lady Margaret Herbert to her grandmother, the late Countess of Chesterfield, d. 27 July, 1885: there is also a tablet to Benjamin Disraeli, Earl of Beaconsfield K.G. d. 19 April, 1881, erected by the lata Countess of Chesterfield: there are 115 sittings. The register, of baptisms only, dates from the year 1766. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £200, with residence and glebe, in the gift of the Earl of Carnarvon, and held since 1897 by the Rev. Henry Alfred Brooksby Crabbe. Bretby Park is the seat of the Earl of Carnarvon, who is lord of the manor and sole landowner; the park is about 700 acres in extent and contains 200 to 300 head of deer. At Stanton is an extensive colliery belonging to and worked by the trustees of the late Earl of Carnarvon (d. 1890). The soil varies; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and roots. The area is 1,848 acres of land and 20 of water; rateable value, £3,784; the population in 1891 was 377.
