Historical Description

The small hamlet of Chaddesden, the property and seat of Sir R. Mead Wilmot, Bart, a descendant of the ancient family of Wyllimot, who resided in the eleventh century at Sutton-upon-Soar, in Nottinghamshire. The mansion is pleasantly situated, and has a handsome appearance.

CHADDESDEN is a parish, about 2 ½ miles east from Derby and 2 ½ north-west from Spondon station on the Trent and Derby branch of the Midland railway, in the Southern division of the county, hundred of Appletree, union of Shardlow, Derby petty sessional division and county court district, rural deanery of Jlkeston, archdeaconry of Derby and diocese of Southwell, The church of St. Mary is an edifice of stone in the Gothic style, consisting of chancel, nave of three bays, aisles and a Perpendicular western tower with embattled parapet containing a clock and three bells, dated 1475: on the south side of the chancel are sedilia and a piscina and other sedilia and a piscina of similar design in the pisles; the font is of marble and Caen stone, and the stained east window is a memorial to Robert Edward Eardley Wilmot, eldest son of Sir Henry Sacheverel Wilmot bart. of Chaddesden, who died 22 Oct. 1861: in 1898 a new oak pulpit was provided, at a cost of £53, as a memorial of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee: a brass lectern, chancel hangings and a banner have also been presented: there are 200 sittings. The register dates from the year 1718 for all entries. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £130, chiefly derived from 23 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Sir Hy. Wilmot bart. V.C., K.C.B, and held since 1896 by the Rev. Arthur Hoste M.A. of Clare College, Cambridge. There is a small Wesleyan Methodist chapel here, built in 1838. Nottingham road cemetery, Chaddesden hill, contains two mortuary chapels, built in 1855. Near a Roman road here are six almshouses, supported by Col. Sir Henry Wilmot bart. V.C., K.C.B., D.L., J.P. whose seat, Chaddesden Hall, a mansion of brick, stands on the outskirts of the village. William D. Nathaniel Drury-Lowe esq. of Locko Park, Spondon, is lord of the manor, and Sir Henry Wilmot bart. is the principal landowner. The soil is loam and sand; subsoil, various. The crops are wheat, oats and barley, but the greater part of the parish is pasture land. The area is 2,155 acres of land and 20 of water; rateable value, £9,480; the population in 1891 was 682.
