Historical Description

CHILCOTE is a township, on the river Mease, 3 miles south-west from Donisthorpe station on the Ashby and Nuneaton branch of the Midland railway, 6 ½ south-west from Ashby-de-la-Zouch, 8 north-east from Tamworth, and 9 south-east from Burton-upon-Trent, in the Western division of the county, Ashby petty sessional division, Ashby union, county court district and rural deanery of Tamworth, archdeaconry of Stafford and diocese of Lichfield.

This township was transferred to Leicestershire from Derbyshire under the provisions of the “Local Government (England and Wales) Act, 1888” (51 & 52 Vict. c. 4), by the counties of Derby and Leicester (Woodville &c. Order), which came into operation Sept. 30, 1897. The chapel of St. Matthew is a small building of stone, in the Gothic style, repaired in 1842, and thoroughly renovated in 1885 by Mrs. Robertson, of Netherseale Hall, in memory of her late husband, Francis Robertson esq. and their only son: it consists of chancel, nave, north porch and a small turret on the western gable containing one bell: previous to the repairs of 1842 there was a round head Norman doorway in the north wall of the nave: the church has a stained window on the north side, and affords 48 sittings. The living is a chapelry annexed to the rectory of Clifton Campville, joint net yearly value £660, including 103 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of H. J. Pye esq. J.P. of Clifton Hall, and held since 1868 by the Rev. Thomas Samuel Fraser Rawlins M.A. late fellow of Worcester College, Oxford, who resides at Clifton Campville, Staffs. Mrs. Mary K. Robertson, of Netherseale Hall, is the sole landowner. The soil is mixed; subsoil, sandstone, clay and gravel. The chief crops are wheat, barley, beans, oats and turnips. The area is 1,325 acres; rateable value, £1,844; population in 1891 was 105.
