Historical Description

CLOWN is a village and parish, with a station on the Mansfield, Clown and Chesterfield branch of the Midland railway from Mansfield to Chesterfield, and another on the Beighton branch of the Lancashire, Derbyshire and East Coast railway, 5 miles south-east from Staveley station, 8 ½ north-east from Chesterfield, 7 south-west from Worksop, in the North Eastern division of the comity, Scarsdale hundred, Eckington petty sessional division, Worksop union and county court district, rural deanery of Staveley, archdeaconry of Derby and diocese of Southwell. The church of St. John the Baptist is a building of stone originally in the Norman style, but partially rebuilt in the Early English and Perpendicular periods, and consists of chancel, nave and an embattled western tower in the Decorated style, with pinnacles, and containing 3 bells dating from 1553; the lectern and altar-cloth were presented by the present rector: the organ was provided at a cost of £150: the church has been repaired and re-seated, and in 1898 a new pulpit was provided and other improvements made, at a cost of £450: there are 250 sittings. The churchyard was enlarged by one acre in 1898, at a cost of £460. The register dates from the year 1569 for all entries, but is in bad condition. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £250, including 67 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Lord Chancellor, and held since 1870 by the Rev. Charles Leonard Helps. The Rev. Joseph Waugh B.A, of St. David’s College, Lampeter, has been curate-in-charge since 1891. Here are Primitive Methodist, Free Methodist and Wesleyan chapels. Gisborne’s Charity of £6 13s. yearly, left in 1818 by the Rev. Francis Gisborne, formerly rector of Staveley, is for clothing: there are other charities amounting to £8 yearly. A market for live stock is held on Tuesday, fortnightly, in the grounds of the Anchor Inn. The Duke of Portland P.C., G.C.V.O, who is lord of the manor, Mrs. Olivier, of Derby, and Col. John Erdeswick Butler-Bowdon, of The Gables, Bournemouth, are owners of the land, most of which is on the limestone, producing fair crops of wheat, barley and turnips. The area is 1,907 acres of land and 6 of water; rateable value, £12,424; the population in 1871 was 1,002; in 1881, 1,812; and in 1891, 2.349.

A School Board of 5 members was formed 18 April, 1876; A. Eason, Clown, Chesterfield, is clerk to the board; Richard Bunting, attendance officer.

Board School (boys), built in 1889, at a cost of £2,000, for 250 boys; average attendance, 245.

Board School (girls & infants), erected in 1877, at a cost of £2,250, for 250 girls & 250 infants'; average attendance, 230 girls & 230 infants; the school is endowed with 13 acres of land, left by Charles Basseldine in 1733.
