Historical Description

CODNOR and LOSCOE are hamlets constituting a township, and were formed into a civil parish, 1 Oct. 1844, from the parishes of Denby, Heanor and Pentrich. Codnor has a station at Crosshill, on the Heanor and Ripley branch of the Midland railway, 5 miles south-east from Alfreton and 6 north-east from Belper, and 2 miles east from Ripley, in the Ilkeston division of the county, hundred of Morleston and Litchurch, Smalley petty sessional division, Basford union, Alfreton county court district (Loscoe being in the Belper and Ilkeston county court district), rural deanery of Alfreton, archdeaconry of Derby, and diocese of South-well: the church of St. James, erected in 1844, at a cost of £2,000, and situated, near the railway station, about midway between the two villages, is a plain building of stone, in the Gothic style, consisting of chancel and nave, and an embattled western tower, with pinnacles, containing one bell: a stained east window was erected in 1898, in memory of the late Mr. George Woolley, his wife and daughter: in 1890 the chancel was entirely rebuilt, a vestry erected, and the church re-decorated and re-seated at a cost of £1,800, under the direction of Mr. J. Holden F.R.I.B.A.: there are 517 sittings. The register dates from the year 1844. The living is a vicarage, net yearly Value £193, including 4 acres of glebe, with residence, in the alternate gift of the Crown and the Bishop of Southwell, and held since 1884 by the Rev. William Bates, Lie. Theol, of University College, Durham. There are Wesleyan, Free Methodist, Baptist and Primitive Methodist chapels, and a Church reading room. The cemetery comprises about an acre, and adjoins the churchyard, and is now under the control of the Parish Council. The Butterley Company Limited, have large collieries at Baileybrook and Loscoe which employ a great number of men. In 1705 Jonathan Tantum left a house, the rent of which averages £11 yearly; two-thirds of this sum (less trustees’ expenses) are given to the poor at Christmas, and the remainder is paid to the trustees of the Heanor Friends’ Meeting. There is another small charity left by the Rev. Francis Gisborne, of Staveley, amounting to about £2 yearly, which is also distributed to the poor. The principal landowners are the Butterley Company Limited, Henry Charles Vickers Hunter esq. of Kilbourne Hall, Derby, the trustees of the late Ven. Archdeacon Woolley M.A. rector of East Bergholt, Suffolk, James John Arthur Woolley esq. Fredk Channer Corfield esq. V.D. and the Rev. Jonathan William Woolley M.A. vicar of Hoveton, Norfolk. The soil is clayey; subsoil, clayey. The land is principally pasture. The area is 1,917 acres of land and 14 of water; rateable value, £13,898; the population in 1891 was 3,848, and of the ecclesiastical parish 4,518.

Waingroves, in the Denby postal delivery, is for ecclesiastical purposes in this parish but for all civil purposes was annexed to Ripley under the Divided Parishes Act in 1888; and names will be found under Ripley.
