Historical Description
Derley or Darley is a populous hamlet, on the west of the Derwent, about one mile from Derby. Its population has increased considerably during some years past, in consequence of the erection of paper and cotton-mills, by the Messrs. Evans, &c. The abbey that stood here was endowed with many tracts of land of great extent in various parts of the county, and the abbot enjoyed several privileges, all his property being exempt from tythe; but in 1539, it was given up to Henry VIII. by the abbot and thirteen monks. Some outhouses and the chapel, converted into dwelling-houses, may still be seen, and serve to point out the situation of this abbey, originally founded in the reign of King Stephen.
DARLEY (or North Darley) is a township, extensive parish, and village, pleasantly situated in a valley, with a station on the Manchester and Buxton railway, 146 miles from London and 4 ½ north-west from Matlock Bath, in the Western division of the county, hundred of High Peak, Bakewell union, the Matlock district of the Wirksworth petty sessional division, county court district of Wirksworth, rural deanery of Bakewell, archdeaconry of Derby and diocese of Southwell. The river Derwent separates North from South Darley. The parish was governed by a Local Board from 1863, but under the provisions of the “Local Government Act, 1,894” (56 and 57 Vict. c. 73) an Urban District Council was established.
