Historical Description

DORE, pleasantly situated on the borders of Yorkshire, is an agricultural village, formerly a township of Dronfield, but since 1844 forming with Totley a separate parish, with a station on the Midland railway, 10 miles north-west from Chesterfield and 5 south-west from Sheffield, in the North Eastern division of the county, petty sessional division of Eckington, hundred of Scarsdale, union of Ecclesall Bierlow, rural deanery of Dronfield, archdeaconry of Derby and diocese of Southwell. The Dore and Chinley railway, opened in 1894, as a branch of the Midland railway, passes under Longshaw moors from Totley brook to near Padley wood by a tunnel 4 miles long, and thus considerably shortens the distance between Manchester and Sheffield. The old chapel, a plain square building, erected about 1700, on the site of the ancient chantry of Beauchief, was taken down on the building of the present church. Christ Church, erected in 1828, is an edifice of stone in a plain modern style, consisting of chancel, nave, north porch and an embattled western tower containing one bell: in 1864 various alterations took place, and in 1882 a stone pulpit and font were presented, the interior reseated and windows in the Gothic style inserted: the chancel was enlarged in 1897 as a memorial to the late Rev. John Thomas Foster Aldred M.A. vicar of Dore, 1849—95: there are sittings for 300. The register of baptisms dates from 1813, marriages 1844 and burials 1829: there are also incomplete memoranda of baptisms from the year 1734, which, as far as possible, have been arranged and re-copied. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £130, including 48 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Earl Fitzwilliam K.G. and held since 1895 by the Rev. William Ralph Gibson. Here is a Primitive Methodist chapel, erected in 1860, with 80 sittings. The charities amount to £12 yearly for bread and clothing. The Sheffield Licensed Victuallers’ Asylum, close to the railway station, was erected in 1887—8, and consists of 12 houses, with a large central room. The Duke of Devonshire K.G., P.C. who is lord of the manor, the Duke of Rutland K.G., P.C., G.C.B., E. Hall, J. Hancock and T. Fumiss esqrs. are principal landowners. The soil is clay; subsoil, various. The chief crops are wheat, oats, turnips, hay and a little barley. The area is 3,593 acres; rateable value, £6,963; the population of the township in 1881 was 874, and in 1891, 1,030; and of the civil parish in 1881, 1,055, and in 1891, 1,030, and 1,646 in the ecclesiastical.

SCHOOLS

Cherry Tree Orphanage, first located at Cherry Tree Hill, Sheffield, now occupies eligible premises on about 7 acres of freehold land at Totley, erected at a cost of £2,300, for 50 children of all denominations & from all parts of the British Empire, who are admitted at from 5 to 10 years of age, the boys remaining until they are 14 & the girls till 16 years of age, when they are placed in suitable situations: a certificated teacher superintends the educational training & a matron is employed to prepare the girls for domestic service: in 1886 a new wing was added at the south side, consisting of convalescent room or class room & a kitchen on the ground floor & two rooms on the first floor, the cost being defrayed by J. E. Bingham esq. of Sheffield: the Orphanage property, vested in trustees, is managed by a committee of Sheffield gentlemen, the household arrangements being conducted by a committee of ladies; the institution is chiefly dependent on voluntary contributions; there are now 54 children.

Free, Dore, for 200 children; average attendance, 150.
