Historical Description
The village of Edale has humble chapel without either spire or tower. A rivulet runs down by it, shewing itself in many places, and by the noise of its fall directs to a mill placed in a little grove. Two or three other clumps of houses, and small tufts of trees, and another streamlet falling into this, enliven the scene. From hence various other dales branch off to what is called the Woodland of Derbyshire, through which no high road has yet been made. A considerable part of this tract, which is of great extent, has been cleared of late years, by the Duke of Devonshire, to whom it mostly belongs.
By custom of the miners, any one who finds a spot in this part of the country unworked, which he thinks likely to produce a vein of lead, though in another man’s field, may put down a little wooden cross, called a stoter, or stow, and having entered his name with the proper officer who sets out a certain number of meers (a meer is about 29 yards), he is then at liberty to work it, sink pits and lay the rubbish about 16 yards on each side as he proceeds. If he do not work it, and if another be inclined to try his fortune, he goes to the officer, tells him such a spot is not worked, and desires him to nick it. The officer with two of a jury of 24, who are sworn for the purpose of attending to this business, go to the spot, cut a nick in the cross, and give notice to the first undertaker that they shall go again at such a time for the same purpose. If no notice be taken, they go a second and a third time, after which the property is vested in the new adventurer, subject to the like rules.
EDALE is a parish, formed in 1863 from Castleton parish, and has a station on the Dore and Chinley section of the Midland railway (opened in 1894), 168 miles from London, 3 north-west from Castleton, 15 north-west from Bakewell and 5 ½ north-east from Chapel-en-le-Frith, in the High Peak division of the county, High Peak hundred, petty sessional division, union and county court district of Chapel-en-le-Frith, rural deanery of Eyam, archdeaconry of Derby and diocese of Southwell. The river Noe runs through the valley. Holy Trinity church, erected in 1812, was demolished by faculty from the Bishop of Southwell, on March, 1885, and the materials incorporated in a new church on a fresh site about 100 yards distant, the site of the old church being added to the burial ground. The new church of the same name, erected in 1885—6, at a total cost of £2,950, and consecrated by the Bishop of Southwell on June 23rd, 1886, is a building in the Early Decorated style, from designs by Mr, William Dawes, architect, of Manchester, and consists of chancel, nave, vestry, organ chamber, south porch and a tower at the north-east angle with octagonal broach spire, completed in 1889, and reaching a height of 89 feet: in the chancel is a picture removed from the old church, representing the “Adoration of the Magi;” and a tablet memorial east window, placed in 1896, to the late Rev. John Champion, for 30 years vicar of Edale; the stone pulpit and chancel screen were the gift of Mrs. W. N. Champion, and the font, a memorial to the late Rev. George Spurrier, a former incumbent, was presented by his relatives. The register, in part a copy of the original, dates from the year 1633. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £200, including 100 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of certain landowners of the parish, and held since 1895 by the Rev. Geo. Fredc. Reynolds M.A of St. John’s College, Cambridge. Here is a Wesleyan chapel, built in 1847. There are various charities for the poor. Here is a large cotton mill, and in the neighbourhood are several natural curiosities, including limestone oaves at Castleton, and a Roman encampment on the top of Mam Tor, while the highest hills in Derbyshire flank the northern side. The principal landowners are the Duke of Devonshire K.G. Lord Scarsdale, George William Shirt esq. and William N. L. Champion esq. of Riddlesworth Hall, Norfolk. The soil varies considerably in quality, but is chiefly cold and heavy, on Yoredale shale, and is mostly devoted to hay and pasture. The area is 7,030 acres of land and 23 of water; rateable value, £5,405; the population in 1891 was 955.
Endowed Church of England School (maxed), founded by Mrs. Bowden, with an income of £12 yearly, augmented by other charities; erected in 1868, for 66 children; average attendance, 39.
