Historical Description

EGGINTON is a parish, village and joint station on the North Staffordshire and Great Northern railways, 4 ½ miles north from Burton-on-Trent, 8 south-west from Derby and 127 from London, in the Southern division of the county, hundred of Morleston and Litchurch, Derby petty sessional division, Burton-on-Trent union and county court district, rural deanery of Longford, archdeaconry of Derby and diocese of Southwell. The river Dove bounds the parish at its southern extremity and falls into the Trent. The church of St. Wilfrid is a building of stone consisting of chancel, clerestoried nave, aisles, vestry, and a low embattled Perpendicular tower at the west end surmounted by pinnacles and containing 3 bells, the second of which is an early bell, with an inscription in Lombardic characters, and was no doubt spared when its fellows were sold to repair Monk's bridge; the first and third are dated 1778 and 1615 respectively: in 1898 the bells were rehung and the belfry new floored, in commemoration of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee: the oldest existing work may be referred to about 1290—1300, when the church was almost entirely rebuilt: the arcades of the nave differ in style, that on the north side being Decorated, and consisting of three arches, on circular piers; the south aisle is 14th century work, with piers of four clustered shafts: the chancel retains a good sedile, with trefoil head, and near it a piscina; in the opposite wall is an almery; the chancel also contains an oak chair, dated 1686, and a copy of Murillo’s Holy Family, by Henderson, presented to the church in 1833 by Joseph Leigh esq. of Belmont, Cheshire: in the south aisle, beneath an arched recess, is the mutilated recumbent figure of a woman, holding a heart in her hands: in the chancel are monuments to Sir Simon Every, the first bart. ob. 1649, and Sir Henry Every, second bart. d. 29 Sept. 1701; the church has also various other memorials of this family, from 1690 to 1812, and to successive rectors of the parish: the church was repewed in 1874 and was restored in 1891—2, under the direction of Messrs. Evans and Jolley, architects, of Nottingham, when the nave, north aisle and chancel were new-roofed, the flooring renewed throughout, an organ chamber built, and a new organ erected. The register, which is well preserved, dates from the year 1561, but is a copy from an earlier volume until 1598: in the vestry is kept a black-letter copy of Erasmus' Paraphrase of the New Testament. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £300, including 51 acres of glebe, with residence, and held since 1888 by the Rev. Joseph Chatto Lamb M.A. of Jesus College, Cambridge, the patronage being now in five parts, two turns belonging to the trustees of Sir Edward Oswald Every bart. (a minor), two to R. W. Chandos-Pole esq. J.P. of Radburne Hall, and one to Joseph Leigh esq. The Primitive Methodist chapel here, built in 1894—5, is a brick building, with stone dressings, and seats about 150 persons. The charities amount to £70 yearly for distribution, arising from £2,000, left by William Newton in 1820, and £300, left in 1856 by the Rev. John Leigh, late rector: Bugbury’s Charity, of 12 penny loaves weekly, dates from the early part of the 18th century. The Burton Corporation Sewage farm was established here in 1885. Egginton Hall, the seat of Sir Edward Oswald Every bart. lord of the manor (a minor), but now in the hands of trustees, is a handsome mansion, in a park of about 50 acres, and now occupied by E. A. J. Maynard esq. J.P. The principal landowners are the trustees for Sir Edward Oswald Every bart. the Corporation of Burton-on-Trent and the Etwall and Repton incorporation. The soil is chiefly light; subsoil, gravel. The parish is mostly pasture land, consisting of dairy farms; there are crops of wheat, barley, clover, mangolds and turnips. The area is 2,342 acres of land and 64 of water; rateable value, £9,529; the population in 1891 was 396.

A School Board of 5 members was formed 10 July, 1878; Thomas John Hulland, clerk to the board & J. A. Tunnicliffe, Newhall, attendance officer.
