Historical Description

HASLAND is a scattered village, township and parish, i formed in 1851, 1 ½ miles south-east from Chesterfield and ½ mile east from Grassmoor station, on the Great Central (late M. S. & L.) railway, in the Chesterfield division of the county, petty sessional division, union and county court district of Chesterfield, Scarsdale hundred, rural deanery of Chesterfield, archdeaconry of Derby and diocese of Southwell; on the extension of the borough of Chesterfield in 1892 part of this parish was included in it, and names are enumerated in those of Chesterfield. The church of St. Paul, erected in 1851, is a building of stone in the Decorated style, consisting of chancel, nave of four bays, north aisle, south porch and a western turret containing 2 bells: there are two memorial windows to the Ven. Archdeacon and Mrs. Hill, inserted by the parishioners in 1867; and a memorial brass to the Ven. Archdeacon Hill, placed by his daughter, Mrs. Olivier: the church affords 388 sittings. The register dates from the year 1851. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £255, with residence, in the gift of the vicar of Chesterfield, and held since 1868 by the Rev. William Barnes, of St. Bees, who is also incumbent of Temple Normanton and rural dean of Chesterfield. There is a Primitive Methodist chapel here, another at Grassmoor, erected in 1898, at a cost of £1,700, and seating 350 persons, and an iron Nonconformist chapel at Grassmoor. A cemetery consisting of 2 acres, with keeper’s residence, was opened in 1883, and is under the superintendence of the Chesterfield Rural District Council, the rector of Hasland being chaplain. Coals and ironstone are found in abundance in this district; bricks and tiles are made. Hasland Hall is the residence of Charles Paxton Markham esq. J.P. The Duke of Devonshire K.G. is lord of the manor, Bernard Lucas and Alfred Barnes esqrs. are the chief landowners. The soil is strong clay; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat and oats. The area of the township as reduced by the addition to Chesterfield municipal borough in 1892 is 1,879 acres; rateable value, £27,868; the population in 1891 was 5,817, but has been reduced by the extension of Chesterfield) borough in 1892 to 4,542.

Schools

A School Board, consisting of five members, was formed 26 April, 1883; W. T. Jones, Chesterfield, clerk to the board; Reuben Fletcher, attendance officer.

Board School (mixed & infants’), Derby lane, acquired by the Board in 1883 & enlarged in 1884, for 240 children; average attendance, 220.

National (Church of England), erected in 1864, for 210 boys, 100 girls & 220 infants. A new infants’ school was erected in 1897, at a cost of about £1,200; average attendance, 150 boys, 100 girls & 150 infants.

National (mixed), Grassmoor, erected for 200 children & 220 infants; average attendance, 171 children & 212 infants.
