Historical Description

HEANOR is a parish, including Heanor, Langley Mill, Langley, Marlpool, Aldercar and Shipley, in the Ilkeston division of the county, Morleston and Litchurch hundred, Basford union, Smalley petty sessional division, Belper and Ilkeston county court district, rural deanery of Alfreton, archdeaconry of Derby and diocese of Southwell, pleasantly situated on a lofty eminence on the road from Derby to Mansfield and is a terminal station on the Ambergate, Ripley and Heanor branch of the Midland railway, opened in 1890; Heanor Gate terminal station, on the branch of the Great Northern railway from Ilkeston, is in Smalley parish; the town is 10 miles north-west from Nottingham, 9 north-east from Derby and 7 east from Belper. The boundary of the parish on the east side is the river Erewash, which also divides the counties of Nottingham and Derby.

Heanor is governed by an Urban District Council of 15 members, under the “Local Government Act, 1894” (56 and 57 Vict. c. 73), which succeeded in 1895 the Local Board, formed about 1850. The town is lighted with gas by the Langley Mill and Heanor Gas Light and Coke Co. Limited, and supplied with water pumped from the blue bind and grey rock; the works (which supply the whole parish) belong to the Urban Council, and are at Langley. The church of St. Michael, given to Dale Abbey by Henry, Lord Grey of Codnor, in 1473, consists of chancel, clerestoried nave, aisles with arcades of four arches, and a lofty embattled western tower of the 15th century, with modern pinnacles containing 5 bells and clock with four illuminated dials; the third and fourth bells are of early date, the others being respectively dated (1) 1781, (2) 1634, (5) 1686: the church was completely rebuilt, with the exception of the tower, in 1868, at a cost of £6,100: there is a memorial dated 1715 to Samuel Watson, the principal artist engaged in the elaborate wood carving at Chatsworth, who was born at Heanor and is buried in the church; there are others to the Mundy family; a brass to John Clark, of Codnor, ob. 1641. and a tablet erected in 1888 to the Rev. Conyngham W. G. Corfield M.A. rector 1880—6: the stained east window was erected in 1883 to the Rev. Frederick Corfield, rector of Heanor (1868—79), and others to John Sutton Ray esq. (1868), Miss Frances S. Ray and Samuel Woolley: there are 750 sittings. The registers dale from the year 1559 and contain various matters of local interest. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £330, including 111 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of four trustees, and held since 1886 by the Rev. Claud Evelyn Lacey Corfield M.A. of St. Catharine’s College, Cambridge. There are Wesleyan, Primitive Methodist, Free Methodist and Baptist chapels, and a meeting house for the Society of Friends. The Christadelphians meet in the Town Hall. The cemetery, opened in 1858, originally consisted of 4 acres, but 6 acres were added in 1893, at a cost of £1,600, making a total cost of £4,000; there are 2 mortuary chapels united in the centre by a tower with spire, and a residence for the curator; it is managed by a burial board of 9 members. The works of Messrs. I. and R. Morley, hosiery manufacturers, situated here, employ over 1,000 people. There are also several collieries in the parish. The Market place, occupying 3 roods, two of which were given by A. E. M. Mundy esq. was laid out in 1890, and a provision market is held every Saturday. A cattle fair is held here on the Thursday before Martinmas day. A charity of £7 5s. left in 1817 by the Rev. Francis Gisborne, sometime vicar of Staveley, is now divided as follows:-£4 5s. for Heanor, £2 for Codnor and £1 to Cotmanhay. Here is a recreation ground of four acres, with a spacious pavilion, built by the Town Cricket and Football Club. The Heanor Fire Brigade consists of 12 members, and has a steam fire engine and about 1,500 feet of hose; Mr. John Holbrook is captain. Heanor Hall is now (1899) occupied by the Technical school, attached to which is a library of about 600 volumes. William Howitt, the historian, was born here 1795. George Hoskin Master esq. is lord of the manor. The principal landowners are Alfred E. M. Mundy esq. of Shipley Hall, Derby, the trustees of F. T. Howitt, Messrs. G. B. and H. G. Gregory and the Butterley Co. The soil is mixed; subsoil, clay. The area of the township of Heanor is 1,571 acres of land and 8 of water; the population in 1881 was 6,823, and in 1891, 9,779; area of the parish, 6,870 acres; rateable value, £32,120.

Petty sessions are held at the Town hall, Heanor, every alternate Monday. The following places are included in the division:-Codnor, Dale Abbey, Denby, Heanor, Horsley, Horsley Woodhouse, Ilkeston, Kirk Hallam, Loscoe, Mapperley, Morley, Sandiacre, Shipley, Smalley, Stanley, Stanton by Dale, West Hallam.
