Historical Description

HORSLEY is an extensive parish, containing the villages and townships of Horsley and Kilburne, in the Ilkeston division of the county, hundred of Morleston and Litchurch, Smalley petty sessional division, Belper union, Belper and Ilkeston county court district, rural deanery of Duffield, archdeaconry of Derby and diocese of Southwell. Horsley Woodhouse has now been made a separate parish, and is given separately. Horsley is on the Derby and Alfreton road, half a mile from Coxbench station on the Derby and Ripley branch of the Midland railway, 2 ½ miles north-east from Duffield and 6 north-east from Derby. The church of St. Clement, seated conspicuously on a height, consists of chancel, clerestoried nave, aisles with arcades of three bays and a western tower with lofty broach spire, containing a clock and 5 bells, the tone of the tenor bell being exceptionally sweet; the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th are respectively dated 1620, 1660 and 1603, and the 5th was given by the late George Slater esq. to commemorate the Queen’s Jubilee in 1887: the tower is a good composition of the Decorated period, dating from the middle of the 14th century, and at the angles are emblems of the Evangelists: the church underwent considerable alteration about 1450, when the walls of the nave were raised, and the clerestory windows inserted: the chancel was rebuilt and lighted with Perpendicular windows, and square-headed traceried windows of like character inserted in the aisles: the chancel, nave and south aisle have battlements and pinnacles, and the north aisle a plain parapet; the south porch is also embattled, and has a well executed crucifix on the gable: the font is an octagon of Perpendicular date, boldly carved with roses and foliage: the chancel retains three canopied sedilia, and there is a small piscina in the south aisle, and a double one in the north aisle, these aisles being prolonged one bay eastward, and opening into the chancel by arches supported on corbels of Decorated character: memorial windows have been presented by J. L. Davenport esq. and George Slater esq. and one in 1894 by the vicar; another to the Sitwell family was removed here from Morley church in 1897; the church was restored in 1858—60, at a cost of £2,221, and in 1898 the spire was repaired and a lightning conductor added, at a cost of £70; there are 350 sittings, 200 being free. The register, which is in a fair condition, dates from the year 155 8 for all entries, but there is a blank from 1643 to 1660. The living is a vicarage, net income £240, with 1 acre of glebe and residence, in the gift of R. S. W. Sitwell esq. and held since 1896 by the Rev. Arthur Garmondsway Waldy M.A. of Merton College, Oxford. There is a Free Methodist chapel here. A charity of £7 5s. left in 1817 by the Rev. Francis Gisborne, sometime rector of Staveley, is distributed by the vicar and other trustees in clothing; John Lockoe left in 1676 a portion of the rent of 12 acres of land, now averaging about £6 yearly, for the poor; Hunter’s charity of £7 yearly is also given to the poor. A castle, built in the 13th century, formerly stood here, but has long since been destroyed. Robert Sacheverell Wilmot Sitwell esq. D.L., J.P. Stainsby House, is lord of the manor and principal landowner. The soil is sand, clay and loam; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are potatoes, wheat, oats, barley and over two-thirds pasture. The acreage of the township is 1,294; rateable value, £2,534; the population in 1891 was 368 in the township, and 1,810 in the parish.

National School (mixed), erected in 1828, for 150 children; average attendance, 135.
