Riber History

RIBER is a small hamlet in this parish, situated on a lofty eminence. Here is a Free Methodist chapel, built by the late John Smedley. Riber Castle, now a preparatory school for boys for public schools, is an imposing structure of local stone, situated on the brow of the hill, 860 feet above the sea level, and commands most extensive views. Riber Hall, now occupied as a farm house, is a building of considerable antiquity. On Riber Hill formerly stood a number of large masses of gritstone, supposed to have been the remains of a Druidical altar.
