Historical Description

NORMANTON is a parish, 1 mile north-west of Pear-tree and Normanton junction on the main line of the Midland railway and 2 miles south from Derby Market place, in the Southern division of the county, hundred of Repton and Gresley, Shardlow union, Derby county court district and petty sessional division, rural deanery and archdeaconry of Derby and diocese of Southwell. The church of St. Giles, rebuilt in 1862, is an edifice of stone in the Early English and Perpendicular styles, consisting of chancel, nave, south aisle, north porch and a western tower with spire containing one bell: there are three stained windows and 300 sittings. The registers date only from the year 1813, before that date entries relating to Normanton are incorporated in the registers of St. Peter’s, Derby. The living is a rectory, net yearly value about £209, with residence, in the gift of trustees, and held since 1898 by the Rev. John Walmsley M.A. of Brasenose College, Oxford. There are Congregational and Primitive Methodist chapels. The trustees of the late Lord Donington (d. 1895) are lords of the manor. The principal landowners are John Shaw esq. J.P. of Normanton House, Mr. Goodale Messrs. Robert, Richard and Edwin Radford, Messrs. Reginald and Raymond Roumieu and Lieut.-Col. George Newdigate J.P. of 63 Pall mall, London S.W. The soil is loam; subsoil, clay and marl, mostly pasture; corn is grown to a very small extent. The area is 1,180 acres; rateable value, £13,723; in 1891 the population of Normanton was 1,186, of this 248 resided in the barracks.

By the Derby Corporation Act. 1890, that part of Normanton included in the municipal borough was created a separate parish, designated New Normanton, and is given with the borough of Derby.

Schools

A School Board of 5 members was formed 5 Feb. 1876, for this parish, but under the “Derby Borough Extension Act, 1890,” the area was reduced and the Board’s district now comprises that portion of the parish in Shardlow union; Edwin Parker, 31 St. Mary’s gate, Derby, clerk to the board; Richard Bate, Fleet street, Derby, attendance officer.

Board (mixed), erected in 1879, for 190 & since enlarged for 240 children; average attendance, 84 boys, 62 girls & 95 infants.

A Sunday school was erected in 1879 by Mr. Shaw, of Normanton House, at a cost of £500.

REGIMENTAL DISTRICT NO. 45.

Depot of the Sherwood Foresters (Derbyshire Regiment): the barracks, constructed of brick, & standing upon 14 acres of ground, were completed in 1878, at a cost of £50,000, & are occupied by the depots of the 1st & 2nd battalions & the headquarters of the 1st & 2nd Derby Militia, & will hold 1 field-officer, 1 quartermaster, 10 officers of other ranks & 224 single & 32 married soldiers. The district is now known as the Territorial district of the Sherwood Foresters (Derbyshire Regiment), and comprises the 1st battalion (45th foot), 2nd battalion (95th foot), 3rd battalion (1st & 2nd Derby Militia) & 4th battalion (Royal Sherwood Foresters Militia): the head-quarters of the last are at Newark.
