Historical Description

PARWICH, in Domesday “Pevrewic,” is a village and parish, 6 miles north from Ashborne station on the North Staffordshire railway, about 6 miles south from Parsley Hay station on the Buxton and Parsley Hay branch of the London and North Western railway, and 6 south-west from Winster, in the Western division of the county, Wirksworth hundred, Ashborne union, petty sessional division and county court district, rural deanery of Ashborne, archdeaconry of Derby, and diocese of Southwell. The old church of St. Peter, which had existed for more than seven centuries, was removed in 1872 to make way for the present church, a building of stone in the Norman style, erected in 1873 at the sole cost of the late Sir T. W. Evans bart. and consisting of chancel, clerestoried nave, aisles and a western tower surmounted by a lofty spire and containing 1 bell: the old north doorway and chancel arch have been preserved; over the doorway is an ancient tympanum of very early date, discovered in the walls of the old church; it is carved with various symbolic figures of animals, and has been an object of much interest to antiquaries: there are 250 sittings. The register dates from the year 1640 and is in good condition. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £230, in the gift of Mrs. Lewis and Mrs. Curtis, and held since 1880 by the Rev. Ernest Horatio May M.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge, who is also vicar of Alsop-en-le-Dale. A Wesleyan chapel was erected in 1843, and will hold about 200 persons. A reading room and club was opened in 1898, and is well supplied with newspapers and periodicals. Beresford’s charity, left in 1695, amounts to £38 yearly, for distribution, £34 being also paid to the minister: Gisborne’s Charity, of £6 10s. yearly, left 7th May, 1818, by the Rev. Francis Gisborne, sometime rector of Staveley, is distributed in clothing to the poor: Thurstan Dale, in 1653, left 10s. annually for the most deserving poor; Margaret Bincliff, in 1788, left the interest of £100 yearly, and Francis Johnson £150 in 1800, both for the poor of this parish; George Dakeyne, in 1757, left £1 annually for the most needy persons in the parish. Here are the supposed remains of a Roman camp within which many Roman antiquities have been found. Mrs. Curtis and Mrs. Lewis, of Bradbourne Hall, are the chief landowners; and there are a few smaller proprietors. The soil is light; subsoil, chiefly limestone. The land is principally in pasture for dairy produce. The acreage is 3,264; rateable value, £3,726; the population in 1891 was 498.

Schools

National (mixed), built in 1862, at the sole expense of the late Sir T. W. Evans bart. for 70 children; average attendance, 90.
