Historical Description

At Radburn , a hamlet, situated about two miles to the north of the last-mentioned place, is the seat of Sacheverel Pole, Esq. The ancient mansion of the Poles stood near the church, and is now in ruins; the present house was built by the late German Pole, Esq., and stands on a pleasant and elevated situation, commanding some fine prospects over the adjacent country.

RADBOURNE is a parish, 2 miles west from Mickleover station on the Uttoxeter and Derby section of the Great Northern railway and 5 ½ west from Derby, in the Southern division of the county, hundred of Appletree, Burton-upon-Trent union, Derby petty sessional division and county court district, rural deanery of Longford, archdeaconry of Derby and diocese of Southwell. The church of St. Andrew is an edifice of stone in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, clerestoried nave of three bays, north aisle, south porch and a low embattled western tower, with pinnacles, containing a clock and 3 bells: the font, which originally belonged to Dale Abbey, has a splendidly carved oaken cover; there are also several carved oak benches and three stone monuments, one (that of Sir Peter de la Pole and his wife) bearing recumbent effigies of a man and woman, the other with several small figures, but partly defaced and without date or inscription: some remains of two piscinae still exist: some restoration was carried out, and a new organ chamber added in 1888, at a cost of £1,500: there are 60 sittings, 30 being free. The register of burials dates from the year 1572, and of baptisms and marriages from 1573. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £356, including 130 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of R. W. Chandos-Pole esq. and held since 1895 by the Rev. Henry John Freake Van B.A. of Cavendish College, Cambridge. Badburne Hall, situated on an eminence, is a large square mansion of red brick in a finely-wooded park, surrounded by extensive well-laid-out pleasure grounds of 18 acres, and is the residence of Reginald Walkelyne Chandos-Pole esq. J.P. who is lord of the manor and sole landowner. The soil is loam and gravel; subsoil, various. The crops are wheat, oats and barley, but the land is principally in pasture. The area is 2,173 acres of land and 9 of water; rateable value £3,912; the population in 1891 was 230.
