RIPLEY is a thriving market town and township, with two railway stations, and in 1855 was formed into a parish from the parish of Pentrich; it is 5 miles north-east from Belper, 3 ½ south-west from Alfreton, 10 north from Derby and 137 from London by rail and 136 by road, in the Ilkeston division of the county, hundred of Morleston and Litchurch, Smalley petty sessional division, Belper union, Alfreton county court district, rural deanery of Alfreton, archdeaconry of Derby and diocese of Southwell. Waingroves, annexed to this parish for civil purposes in 1888, under the “Divided Parishes Act,” is ecclesiastically attached to Codnor and Loscoe. A branch line of the Midland railway from Derby was opened for passenger traffic in 1857, with a station one mile south of the town, and in 1890 a new station was built in the town replacing the old one, and the line was then extended to Butterley station, one mile north on the Ambergate and Pye Bridge branch: in the same year a new line was opened for passenger traffic to Codnor and Heanor, joining the Derby branch 1 mile south of Ripley station. The town is under the management of an Urban District Council, under the provisions of the “Local Government Act, 1894,” formed in 1894, who succeeded the Local Board, formed in 1867: it is lighted with gas and supplied with water from an artesian well 180 feet deep; the works, situated near the Market place, are the property of the Urban District Council. For urban purposes the district is divided into five wards. The church of All Saints, erected in 1821, is a building of stone in the Decorated style, consisting of chancel, nave, porch and an embattled tower at the south-west angle, containing a clock and 5 bells, dated 1861; the lower stage of the tower forms a porch: it was completely restored in 1861, and an organ was presented by Major Jessop in 1863: there are 600 sittings. The register dates from the year 1821. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £300, including 56 acres of glebe, in the gift of the trustees of the late Francis Wright esq. and held since 1887 by the Rev. William Edgar Bradstock M.A, of Brasenose College, Oxford. A vicarage house was erected in 1865. St. John’s district church, at Green Hillocks, erected in 1894 at a cost of £4,000, replaces the former iron church built by the Butterley Company, at a cost of about £800: the new church is of red brick with stone dressings in the Early Decorated style and consists of chancel, nave of five bays, aisles, and a small central turret with spire containing one bell: there are 400 sittings: the Rev. Gersrd Irvine B.A. of Trinity College, Dublin, has been curate in charge since 1898. There are Baptist, Wesleyan, United Free Methodist, Primitive Methodist, and Congregational chapels, and the Christadelphians have a meeting room in Park road. A cemetery of five acres, with a mortuary chapel, was formed in 1858, and enlarged in 1898 by the addition of 2 ½ acres, and is under the control of a Burial board of nine members. The Market Hall, erected in 1880 by the late Local Board, contains a large room for entertainments as well as a Board room and public offices, and a fire engine house. At Butterley are the blast furnaces, foundries, boiler yards and iron works of the Butterley Company Limited, who are also proprietors of several large collieries here and in the neighbouring parishes, in which hard and soft coal of good quality is worked, adjoining the Cromford canal, and have a branch line of railway from Codnor Park to the Butterley works. Messrs. Crossley have an extensive establishment for the manufacture of cotton wicks and silk, cotton and mohair braids, boot laces &c. A market granted by charter of Henry III. and formerly held on Wednesday, is now held on Saturday. Fairs are held on Wednesday in Easter week and the Thursday nearest the 23rd of October, and two following days. Butterley Hall, the residence of Albert Leslie Wright esq. J.P. is a stone mansion, situated on a pleasant acclivity, with extensive pleasure grounds. There are no manorial rights. The shareholders of the Butterley Company Limited are the principal landowners. The area is 2,795 acres of land and 20 of water; rateable value, £30,420. The population of the township, including the hamlets of Butterley, Green Hillocks, Greenwich, Hartshay, Marehay and Street Lane, in 1881, was 7,298, and in 1891, was 8,774; the population of the ecclesiastical parish in 1881 was 6,824, and in 1891, 7,687.
