Historical Description

SAWLEY is a parish, comprising the township of Sawley with Wilsthorpe, on the borders of Leicestershire, and has a station 1 mile south-east from the village, and another (Sawley junction) about ½ mile south-west, on the Midland railway, 8 ½ miles south-south-east from Derby, 8 ½ south-south-west from Nottingham and 123 from London, in the Ilkeston division of the county, hundred of Morleston and Litchurch, union of Shardlow, Derby petty sessional division and county court district, rural deanery of Ilkeston, archdeaconry of Derby and diocese of Southwell. The river Derwent unites with the Trent in this parish, and is crossed by the Erewash canal on an aqueduct. A church existed here previous to 822. The church of All Saints is an ancient edifice of stone, restored and added to in the 13 th century, and now comprises chancel, clerestoried nave of four bays, wide aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower, with lofty spire, containing a clock and 6 bells, 3 of which are ancient: the chancel arch, its superincumbent masonry, and the north wall of the chancel, are supposed to be Saxon, the latter showing distinct traces of herring-bone work: the aisles are partly Early English, with pointed arches and octagonal piers, but several of the windows are of the Decorated period, the tower is early 15th century Perpendicular: on the south side is a stained window, placed by the clergy and lay representatives of the former rural deanery of Ockbrook as a token of esteem for the Rev. Samuel Hey M.A. a former rector, who for a period of 45 years presided over their councils, and in 1894 another was erected to his memory by his relatives: there is a locker on the north side of the chancel, a piscina on the south side, and one in the north aisle: the carved oak Jacobean pulpit is dated 1636: an ancient oak screen separates the nave and chancel: the western organ gallery, erected in 1838, has been removed: Ralph de Chaddesden, prebendary of Sawley in Lichfield cathedral, from 1259 to 1266, whose, effigy now lies in the chapel, founded a chantry here, and partly rebuilt the aisles: under a canopy in the chancel is the recumbent figure of Roger Bothe, dated 1466: in a recess, in the south wall of the chancel, is an alabaster effigy of John Bothe, a canon and prebendary of Sawley in 1474: this prebend was suspended by 3 & 4 Vic. c. 113: near the reading desk in the nave is an altar tomb, with brasses to Robert Bothe, son of Roger, ob. 1478: there are other interesting effigies and memorials, but the names and dates are mostly illegible: the church was restored in 1889 at a cost of £2,200, and in 1898 choir stalls of old oak were placed in the chancel: there are 500 sittings, 250 being free. The register dates from the year 1654, but is defective between 1691 and 1697. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £300, including 4 acres of glebe with residence, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Lichfield, and held since 1893 by the Rev. Arthur Edward Clarke B.A. of Christ’s College, Cambridge. There are Wesleyan, General Baptist and Primitive Methodist chapels here, The charities amount to £36 13s. yearly for fuel, clothing, nursing the sick, and for educational and other purposes. The Earl of Harrington, who is lord of the manor, and William P. Bennett esq. are the principal landowners. The soil is sand and gravel; subsoil, gravel. The chief crops are wheat, oats and pasture land. The area of the parish is 1,771 acres of land and 89 of water; rateable value, £8,941; the population of the township of Sawley with Wilsthorpe in 1891 was 1,415.
