The Foston brook, flowing through the township, forms a lake in Foston park. By Local Government Board order a detached part of Church Broughton, known as Mackley Meadow Acres, was transferred to Scropton and Foston in 1885. By an order of the Derbyshire and Staffordshire County Councils dated 22 May, 1890 (confirmed by Local Government Board order No. 26,017), which came into effect 29 Sept. 1890, the parts of Scropton and Foston in Staffordshire were amalgamated with Tatenhill, Tutbury and Yoxall respectively. The church of St. Paul, rebuilt in 1856, is a building of stone in the Early English style, consisting of chancel with aisle, nave, south porch and a western tower with spire containing a clock and 3 bells: in 1893 a memorial window to Admiral Sir A. Cumming K.C.B, was erected by his widow: there are 220 sittings. The register dates from the year 1680. The living formerly a donative, became a preventative living Jan. 1st 1899, net yearly value £93, including 16 acres of glebe, in the gift of Henry Jack Cumming esq. of 2 Cambridge square, London, and held since 1899 by the Rev. Warwick Stretton Penley B.A. of the University of London. Here are a few unimportant charities. Wall’s charity, amounting to about £5 yearly, is given to the poor of the parish in bread and gowns on St. Thomas’ day in each year. In 1885 Miss Elizabeth Eld bequeathed the sum of £300 to the vicar and churchwardens for the time being to be invested in £3 per cent. Consols, and to be laid out by them in purchasing clothes and coals to be distributed annually at Christmas amongst 12 or more of the oldest poor men and women of the parish of Scropton. The parish feast is on the nearest Sunday to St. Paul’s day. The soil is light loam; subsoil, gravel. The chief crops are wheat, barley, clover, mangolds and turnips. The area is 2,815 acres of land and 35 of water; rateable value, £8,045; the population in 1891 was 512 in the civil and 528 in the ecclesiastical parish. Foston is 1 ¼ miles north from Scropton. Foston Hall, the property of Henry Jack Cumming esq. of 2 Cambridge square, W. London, lord of the manor and principal landowner, is pleasantly situated here; it is now occupied by the Hon. George Higginson Allsopp M.P., M.A., J.P.
