Historical Description

The hamlet of Shardlow, about four miles to the south-west of which is Swarkstone Bridge, which crosses the Trent, and is said to be the longest in Europe, extending across the meadows subject to be overflowed by that river near a mile; the number of arches, standing at various distances from each other, is about 29. This bridge was originally constructed several centuries ago; that part of this fabric which crossed the Trent has, however, been rebuilt.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

SHARDLOW is a parish and head of a union, on the borders of Leicestershire, 1 ½ miles north from Castle Donington and Shardlow station on the Trent and Melbourne branch, 2 ½ south-west from Draycott station on the Trent and Derby branch, 4 ½ east from Trent Junction on the main line of the Midland railway and 7 south-east from Derby, in the Southern division of the county, hundred of Morleston and Litchurch, Derby petty sessional division and county court district, rural deanery of Melbourne, archdeaconry of Derby and diocese of Southwell.

The Trent and Mersey canal runs through and joins the river Trent, about half a mile below the village, having on its banks and branches various coal and timber wharfs. Cavendish bridge, of three arches, over the Trent, erected in 1771 at a cost of £3,333, is about a quarter of a mile from this village. The parish is supplied with gas by the Dravcott Gas Co. The church of St. James, erected in 1838, is a building of stone in the Early Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel and nave, north and south porches and an embattled western tower with pinnacles, containing a clock with chimes and 6 bells; the chancel windows and one each side of the nave are stained; there are 500 sittings. The register dates from the year 1839. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £250, including 85 acres of glebe, in the gift of Edward Sutton esq, and held since 1897 by the Rev. Robert Lethbridge Farmer, of St. Aidan’s. There is a Wesleyan chapel here, built in 1829, with 200 sittings. Soresby’s charity of about £13 is distributed to the poor by the rector and churchwardens, and Foswick and Burgen’s charity of £10 yearly by the trustees. Here is an extensive brewery and malt-houses, worked by Messrs. Z. Smith & Co. Limited. Shardlow Hall, the property of Edward Sutton esq. J.P. of Maxey House, Market Deeping, is a mansion of stone, erected in 1684, and at present tenanted by William Dobson esq. Shardlow House, also the property of Edward Sutton esq. and tenanted by Joseph Marshall, was erected in 1726, as appears by the quaint leaden water pipes bearing grotesque castings of birds and other animals. William Dickson Winterbottom esq. of Aston Hall, who is lord of the manor, Henry Dickinson and Edward Sutton esqrs. and the Earl of Harrington are the principal landowners. The soil is loamy; subsoil, gravel. The chief crops are oats, wheat, barley and pasture land. The area is 1,172 acres of land and 32 of water; rateable value, £4,100; the population in 1891, including Great Wilne, was 842, and 7 officers and 136 inmates at the workhouse.

GREAT WILNE (or Far Wilne) is a small village, through which the river Derwent passes and afterwards joins, the Trent. Here is a Methodist New Connexion chapel.
