Historical Description
SHIREBROOK is a populous parish formed 4 May, 1849, from that of Pleasley, on the borders of Nottinghamshire, with a station on the Mansfield and Worksop line of the Midland railway, 6 miles north-west from Mansfield, 11 south-east from Chesterfield, in the Chesterfield division of the county, Chesterfield petty sessional division, Mansfield union, Mansfield county court district, rural deanery of Alfreton, archdeaconry of Derby and diocese of Southwell. The Lancashire, Derbyshire and East Coast Railway runs through this parish. Holy Trinity church, erected in 1843, at a cost of £1,000, is a plain building of stone, consisting of chancel, nave and a western turret containing one small bell; there are brasses to Mr. and Mrs. Eadson and to the Rev. John Cargill, 26 years vicar of Shirebrook, both erected by Miss Eadson, of Mansfield; the church affords 200 sittings. The register dates from the year 1849. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £195, with residence, in the gift of J. Paget esq. and held since 1894 by the Rev. John Harry Buchanan M.A. of the University of Edinburgh. There is a Primitive Methodist chapel here. Boler’s charity of 21s. yearly is distributed in money. Stuffynwood Hall is the residence of Arthur Markham esq. Mrs. Paget is the principal landowner. The area is 1,441 acres; rateable value, £2,466; the population in 1891 was 576.
