Historical Description
STANTON-IN-THE-PEAK is a township and village, and was formed out of Youlgrave into a parish in 1876, 2 miles south-west from Rowsley station on the Manchester line of the Midland railway, 4 miles south-east from Bakewell and 8 miles from Matlock, in the Western division of the county, hundred of High Peak, Bakewell union, petty sessional division and county court district, rural deanery of Bakewell, archdeaconry of Derby and Southwell diocese. The water supply is derived from springs rising in the neighbouring grit-stone hills. By the “Divided Parishes Act” a detached part of Birchover was transferred to Stanton and a detached part of Stanton was transferred to Birchover. The church of Holy Trinity, erected in 1839 as a private chapel by the late William Pole Thornhill esq. at a cost of £3,000, and transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners in 1875, is a cruciform building, consisting of chancel, nave, transept, south porch and a tower at the east end with spire and containing a clock and 6 bells, dated 1838: in 1883 a memorial window was erected by Major McCreagh Thornhill to Emma, daughter of the late Henry Bache Thornhill esq. and wife of F. S. Hurlock esq. and to her son; there are also two other stained windows, and the church affords 150 sittings. The living is a vicarage, with the chapelry of Birchover annexed, in the gift of Mrs. M’Creagh-Thomhill, and endowed by the late Wm. Pole Thornhill esq. net yearly value (including Birchover) £270, with residence at Birchover, and held since 1891 by the Rev. James Edwin Jagger M.A. of St. John’s College, Cambridge. There is a Reformed Wesleyan chapel here and another at Stanton Lees. The cemetery here contains 1 ½ acres. About a mile south of the village, on high ground, is a large mass of rock, locally called “The Tu-penny Loaf,” and estimated to weigh about 200 tons; footholds have been cut in the side, and from the top a splendid view is obtained of the surrounding country. Stanton Hall, the seat of the Thornhill family, now occupied by Major Michael McCreagh-Thomhill J.P. is a fine mansion, with several handsome terraces, and grounds are laid out with much taste; the park contains about 130 acres, adorned with fine timber and stocked with deer: the carriage drive is 1 ¾ miles in length. Major McCreagh-Thornhill is lord of the manor and principal landowner. The soil is light grit and sand; subsoil, stone beds. The land is principally in pasture. The area is 1,917 acres of land and 11 of water; rateable value, £4,945; the population in 1891 was 826 in the township and 893 in the parish.
Stanton Hill Side is part of Birchover Street; and Pilhough and Stanton Lees and Congreave hamlets are in this township.
Stanton Church of England School (mixed), erected in 1879 by the late Mrs. Thornhill Gell, for 150 children; average attendance, 108.
