Historical Description
STANTON-BY-BRIDGE is a parish overlooking the Trent valley, 2 miles north-west from Melbourne station on the Derby and Ashby-de-la-Zouch branch of the Midland railway and 6 south-south-east from Derby, in the Southern division of the county, Repton and Gresley hundred, Repton and Melbourne petty sessional division, Shardlow union, Derby county court district, rural deanery of Melbourne, archdeaconry of Derby and diocese of Southwell. Works were begun here in 1890 for obtaining a supply of water for Long Eaton, Melbourne and Castle Donington, and a new main has been laid from Seven Springs at the expense of Sir Francis Burdett bart. for supplying his tenants with water.
By Local Government Board Order, a detached part of Ticknall was transferred to this parish in 1884. The church of St. Michael is a building of stone, consisting of chancel, nave, north aisle, south porch and a small turret on the western gable containing 3 bells, of modern date; the original church was erected in the 10th century, and rebuilt about 1275, when the Early English style was beginning to give way to the Decorated, the body of the church seeming to have been rebuilt some time later, the arcade of the aisle, with its windows, being of the Decorated period: at the east end of this aisle is a piscina: several fragments of incised slabs of the 12th century, a cross and a coped tombstone were discovered during a recent restoration: against the south chancel wall is an alabaster slab, with the incised figures of a man in plate armour and a lady, being the upper part of an altar tomb formerly in the nave; it has a marginal inscription to William Sacheverell esq. ob. 5 September, 1558, and Mary (Lowe) his wife: against the same wall is found the alabaster monument, also with an incised figure, of Katherine, wife of Richard Francis esq. (1530): the chancel was restored in 1866: the font is an octagonal work of the 14th century: in the north wall of the aisle, beneath a plain arch, is the stone effigy of an ecclesiastic, probably, of the 14th century: the east and west windows in the north aisle are stained, and there is a handsome reredos of alabaster erected in 1879 by the Rev. Edward Wright Whittaker, in memory of his father, the late rector: there are 200 sittings. The register of baptisms dates from the year 1664; marriages, 1679; and burials, 1676: there is an old book of parish accounts, from 1690, containing two terriers of the rectory, 1698 and 1766, and a list of collections by Brief from 1690 to 1727, including the churches of Ilkeston and Wirksworth. The living is a rectory, annexed to that of Swarkestone, joint net yearly value £465, derived from 310 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Sir Vauncey Harpur Crewe bart. and held since 1888 by the Rev. Charles Henry Carlisle Th.Assoc. K.C.L. Clarke’s charity of £23 yearly is for apprenticing boys and for educational purposes. Sir Vauncey Harpur Crewe bart. of Calke, and Col. Sir Francis Burdett bart. of Foremark, are joint lords of the manor and principal landowners. The chief crops are wheat, barley and oats. The area is 1,408 acres of land and 25 of water; rateable value, £2,025; the population in 1891 was 116.
