Historical Description

Stapenhill is a parish, including the townships of Stapenhill, Stanton and Newhall and Cauldwell, in the Southern division of the county of Derby, hundred of Repton and Gresley, petty sessional division of Swadlincote, union and county court district of Burton-upon-Trent, rural deanery of Repton, archdeaconry of Derby and diocese of Southwell, and is now included in the municipal borough of Burton-on-Trent. Stapenhill village is pleasantly seated on the south-east bank of the river Trent, 1 mile east-by-south from Burton-upon-Trent railway station, and is connected with Burton by the bridge built in 1863—64 by the Midland Railway Company. The church of St. Peter, rebuilt in 1880—81 from designs by Messrs. Evans and Jolly, of Nottingham and Burton-on-Trent, at a cost of about £13,500, is a plain edifice of Derbyshire stone with Ancaster stone dressings, in the Late Decorated and Perpendicular styles, consisting of chancel, transepts, clerestoried nave, aisles, south porch and an embattled tower on the southwest, 100 feet in height, with angle pinnacles 21 feet high and containing one bell: in the porch is an alabaster tombstone with incised effigies, and a Latin inscription to William Dethick esq. and Margaret his wife, 1497: there are 850 sittings. The register dates from the year 1679. The living is a vicarage, average tithe rent-charge £109, net yearly value £320, including 89 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Marquess of Anglesey, and held since 1875 by the Rev. Edmund Warbreck B.A. of Trinity College, Dublin. Here are Wesleyan, Free Methodist and Primitive Methodist chapels. Several small sums, bequeathed by different persons, are annually distributed to the poor. A British trench and remains of the Romano-British and Saxon periods, including a Saxon burial ground, were discovered near the Stanton road in 1881; and upwards of 30 skeletons, sepulchral urns, fibulae, beads, iron knives, spear heads, the umbo of a shield and an Antonine coin were dug up, and are now preserved in the Archaeological Museum in Horninglow street. The Marquess of Anglesey is lord of the manor and chief landowner. The soil is chiefly clay; subsoil, the same; and the land is mostly in pasture for dairy produce. The area is 4,620 acres; rateable value, £14,355; the population of the parish in 1891 was 4,703.

Cauldwell, Stanton and Newhall are in the Burton union, but being outside the borough.
