Historical Description

In Sudbury we find Sudbury Park, the seat of Lord Vernon. The house is a respectable building, of red brick, intermixed with others of a darker colour ; and though not very large it is well proportioned, and has two small wings: a good gallery runs through the house, the interior of which is fitted up in a neat and elegant manner. The village Church, which is an ancient fabric, stands in the garden near the house.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

SUDBURY is a parish and village on the road from Derby to Uttoxeter, with station on the North Staffordshire railway, about a mile from the village, 13 miles south-west from Derby, 5 east from Uttoxeter, 10 north-east from Burton and 131 ½ from London, in the Western division of the county, hundred of Appletree and petty sessional division of Sudbury, union and county court district of Uttoxeter, rural deanery of Longford, archdeaconry of Derby and diocese of Southwell. There was a church here at the Domesday survey. The church of All Saints is a building of stone in the Later Perpendicular style, incorporating some Norman and Early English details; it consists of chancel, nave of four bays, aisles, south porch, north chapel, and an embattled western tower with pinnacles, containing 6 bells, dating from 1598 to 1886, when the last bell was added and the old bells rehung at a cost of £200: there is a very fine monument to the builder of the Hall, dated 1622: in 1850 a memorial window was placed in the chancel by H.M. the Queen and the Prince Consort to George Edward Anson esq. C.B. many years keeper of the privy purse to Her Majesty, and a native of Sudbury, d. 8 Oct. 1849; and there are others to the Rev. Frederick Anson, canon of Windsor and rector of Sudbury, d. 9 Sept. 1885, to the late Lord Vernon, d. 1883, and various other persons: a beautiful reredos of alabaster, with oak casing, and a central panel of “The Crucifixion,” in high relief and three stained windows were erected in 1885, as a memorial to Augustus Henry, 6th Baron Vernon, d. 1 May, 1883: the oldest monuments are the recumbent effigies of two females, probably of the 13th century, their wimpled heads resting on diamond shaped pillows, and holding hearts in their hands; these presumably represent ladies of the Montgomery family, who held estates here, and from whom by marriage they passed to the Vernons: there are also numerous monuments to the Vernon family, including one of marble, to John Vernon and his wife Mary, dated 1600; the effigy of the knight is in plate armour, with a small ruff round his neck, and lies beneath an arch; below, on a projecting altar tomb, rests the effigy of his wife, who by her prudence and care redeemed the family estates, which had become involved: at the east end of the north aisle is a chapel erected by the late Lord Vernon, to which most of the monuments of his family and the Montgomery effigies have been removed: the church was restored during the period 1873—86, at a cost of £8,900, chiefly defrayed by the late Lord Vernon: there are 350 sittings. The register of baptisms and burials dates from the year 1673, and of marriages from 1674. The living is a rectory, with 134 acres of glebe, net income £550, with residence, in the gift of Lord Vernon, and held since 1877 by the Ven. Thomas Henry Freer M.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge, archdeacon of Derby, examining chaplain to the Bishop of Southwell and prebendary of Southwell. There is a library of 300 volumes and a reading room, partly supported by Lord Vernon. Adelaide, the late Queen Dowager, resided here from August, 1840, to 1843. The Independent Order of Oddfellows has two lodges here, the “Loyal Lord Vernon,” for adults, and the “Loyal Freer,” for junior members; the meetings of the senior lodge are held at the Vernon Arms. The charities, amounting to nearly £50 yearly, were founded by Messrs. Noon and Turton, G. Vernon and John Harstaffe, in or about 1642 and 1670; there are also gifts bequeathed by the Most Rev. Edward Vernon Harcourt D.D. (a native of Sudbury, archbishop of York and a former rector), William Jackson and John Williams. Sudbury Hall, the property of Lord Vernon, lord of the manor, but at present occupied by John Gretton esq. D.L. is a fine mansion in the Elizabethan style, with a magnificent gallery 145 feet long, containing a valuable library; the mansion underwent extensive alterations and repairs in 1876; the adjacent park contains about 600 acres, and is well stocked with deer: from the south-west terrace, overlooking a lake, a superb view is obtained across the valley of the Dove to Needwood Forest. Here are the head quarters of the Meynell Hunt; Richard Fort esq. of Foston, is the master: the kennels and stables, large and commodious buildings, are situated about a mile from the Hall in the Ashborne road: the pack hunts four days a week, and Derby, Uttoxeter and Burton-on-Trent are convenient quarters for visitors: there are still remains here of the old village stocks. Lord Vernon and the Rector are the only landowners. The soil is a light loam; subsoil, gravel. It is chiefly rich dairy pastoral land, with small crops of wheat, barley and turnips. The area is 3,595 acres of land and 43 of water; rateable value, £6,722; the population in 1891 was 530.

Aston, ½ mile east, Hill Somersal, 2 ½ miles north-west. Oaks Green, 1 mile north-west, and Potter Somersal, 2 ½ miles north-north-west, are places here.

Petty Sessions are held at the Vernon Arms the last Monday in every month, at 11 a.m. . The following places are included in the petty sessional division:-Alkmanton, Barton Blount, Boyleston, Cubley, Church Broughton, Doveridge, Scropton, Foston, Hargate Manor, Hatton, Hilton, Hoon, Hungry Bentley, Mars-ton-on-Dove, Somersall Herbert, Sudbury, Sutton-on-the-Hill, Norbury, Roston, Marston Montgomery.
